The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a part-time (50%) Nursing Assistant to support our Outpatient Clinic. Under direct supervision of physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered nurse, performs technical, patient care and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting. Duties may involve the use of electronic word/ data processing equipment and/or conventional office equipment.

Pay Grade: 4

Percent of Time: 50%

Schedule: 20 hrs/wk (Monday - Friday). Scheduled hours between 7am - 6pm.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families and staff.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, including but not limited to: allergies and immunizations and vital sign assessment (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature).
  • Manage internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work, does electrocardiograms and x-ray work as needed.
  • Perform related clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments and providing information to other departments.
  • Partner with nursing staff to ensure timely, thorough clinic work up and follow up including calls to patients (post procedure, normal test results, fasting, appointment reminders, etc.), preparation of patient education materials and packets, monitoring of fax machine and distribution of faxes, obtain outside records/labs.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Technicians and Medical Assistants across clinic/specialty to ensure optimal patient experience and efficient clinic flow.
  • Utilize departmental-assigned Voalte system(s) at all times during scheduled work hours to ensure appropriate and timely communication. Answer and respond to inquiries in a timely manner. Appropriately direct questions to physicians, nurses, Imaging Technologist and/or clinical care staff.
  • Participate in huddles to address issues and plan upcoming clinics.
  • Demonstrate accountability for patient satisfaction.
  • Participate in discharge planning process to ensure continuity of care and appropriate identification of primary provider.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain a courteous and respectful approach toward patients, visitors, and fellow staff members.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform CPR and emergency care procedures.
  • Ability to work safely and willingness to comply with special safety and health precautions including universal precautions.
  • Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.
  • Ability to use supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Ability to maintain personal appearance in accordance with dress code.
  • Ability to be punctual, dependable and flexible (so as to alter work schedule to meet unit/patient needs).
  • Ability to read and understand instructions and guidelines and to read data indicators.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Special Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and meet University Fleet Safety Program requirements.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills desired.
  • Previous experience providing direct patient care in, or demonstrated knowledge of cardiovascular services desired.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant is preferred
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
