Job Summary

This is technical and managerial work performing a variety of complex tasks related to the daily operations of the Physical and Biochemistry Facility (PBIF) and the Macromolecular Crystallography Facility (CAF). PBIF and CAF are located in Simon Hall MSB-1 science building receiving hundreds of users monthly. Both are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation, facilitating research for many groups in Biochemistry, Biology, and Chemistry Departments.

Support and assist a variety of research projects, jointly with the supervisor, by maintaining lab operations on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Act as manager for PBIF - keep facility organized and ensure continuous operation. Perform scholarly research and train other personnel in PBIF (such as students) in standard techniques used in the lab. Assist users in experiments, automated and manual dispensing of commercial screens, crystallography screenings, sample preparation, crystal optimization, crystal harvesting, and data collection. Assist users in PBIF with experiments sample preparation and measurement. Perform data entry, organization and maintenance of files, upkeep of lab calendar, and monthly billing. Monitor and assess consumables inventory and order supplies as needed. Develop standard operating procedures for lab instrumentation and modify these procedures as appropriate. Monitor lab usage to ensure safe and efficient use of facilities.

There will be opportunities to participate in data interpretation and publication of the results.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or a related discipline.

Good organization skills, with meticulous attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean and organized laboratory. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent computational/data analysis skills. Excellent time management skills, and ability to be flexible with changes in daily or weekly tasks. Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Dream Weaver.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree. One to five years of experience in structural biology.

Working Conditions / Demands

Position requires focus and judgement to achieve a variety of scientific tasks. Requires remaining stationary, bending, and some lifting. Handling liquid nitrogen is required as well as container refilling, as needed. Work in a cold room may be exceptionally performed. Position requires intense mental concentration as a fair amount of time on balances, computers, and other specialized equipment is required.
