About the Department:

Student Academic Engagement & Success (SAES) is a division within the Office of the Provost at SMU that oversees a wide range of academic support and engagement offices and initiatives.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Academic Counselor specializes in helping undeclared undergraduate students who are on academic probation reach their potential. This person provides individual academic counseling and success coaching for every undeclared student on academic probation, usually defined as under a 2.0 SMU cumulative GPA, and will also play the primary role in counseling suspended students as to the conditions required for their reinstatement.

The academic counselor will teach academic success workshops, maintain thorough and accurate files, create and distribute annual reports, and will have frequent contact with the Director of the University Advising Center, advisors, and family members on behalf of students. This person will assist with first-generation initiatives and programming.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide undeclared probation students individual academic counseling and problem solving. The average caseload each fall term is 77 students, and the average caseload each spring term is 126 students. Design and implement programs and services intended to facilitate these students' academic progress. Utilizing early alert data from EPR, MPR and Dropout Detective during counseling and outreach.

  • Maintain thorough files, notes and spreadsheets for undeclared students on academic probation. Review student data files-individually and in aggregate-and create annual probation reports based on this analysis. Distribute annual reports to SASP staff, the Committee on Academic Petitions, the University Advising Center, and the Associate Provost for Student Academic Engagement and Success.

  • Assist in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of campus-wide initiatives for first-generation college students. Attend initiative events and other relevant activities.

  • Conduct individual and group academic support sessions with first-generation students to assist in their transition to college and academic progress.

  • Consultation with the University Advising Center (UAC) Director and Committee on Academic Petitions (CAP) for Probation/Suspension/Dismissal. Represent SASP at weekly UAC meetings and bi-annual CAP meetings. Serve on the Associate Provost's Retention Task Force, and provide and solicit feedback from students on academic probation.

  • Consultation with faculty, advisors, and families. Includes review of FERPA permissions and explaining any information sharing limitations that may be required. Utilizing early alert information and tools in Canvas such as Dropout Detective

  • Consultation with students via written and oral communication. Review Early and Midterm progress reports and Dropout Detective, and communicate with students about concerns. Submit Caring Community Connections (CCC) for students as needed.

  • Plan and facilitate four academic success workshops at the beginning of each regular term for new and continuing undeclared undergraduates on academic probation. This includes reviewing expectations, grade performance necessary to complete probation and regain academic progress.

  • Position requires occasional evening and weekend work for academic success workshops and first-gen events.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Master's degree is required, preferably in counseling, education, psychology or a related academic discipline.

A minimum of one year of work experience in a university learning assistance program or counseling/teaching/advising at the secondary or post-secondary level is required, which may include graduate assistant positions or internships.

Experience working with academically under-performing college students from a variety of backgrounds is also required.

Experience working with parents/families during stressful situations is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills. The ability to work as part of a team and in an independent role with minimal supervision is essential.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. The ability to manage crisis situations with good judgement and discretion is required.

Candidate must have strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. Must also have strong project management skills.

Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
