Position Summary

The Manager, Quality has the responsibility for planning, coordinating, managing and optimizing the organization's Quality Management System and department personnel to ensure continuous production/service consistent with established standards.

Matrix Composites (an ITT Company) designs and manufactures a broad range of high-performance composite components and assemblies. Founded in 1993, Matrix serves the unique needs of customers engaged in critical applications in industries such as Aerospace, Defense and Commercial/General Aviation. Full-service capabilities include design, development, tooling, fabrication, testing and integration.Safety is a core value at Matrix Composites. This position requires use of information which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. Essential Responsibilities

  • Establishes quality policy, communicating the overall vision for all quality systems, and facilitates implementation of new quality systems and improvements.
  • Provides leadership and management for the quality function, sustaining the quality philosophy and Lean culture for the organization.
  • Continually enhances and improves the organization's products and services through the implementation of ISO 9001/AS9100, problem-solving tools, prevention methods, and continual improvement techniques.
  • Formulates and maintains quality control objectives, coordinating those objectives with company procedures in cooperation with other managers to maximize quality while minimizing costs.
  • Manages, through intermediate personnel, workers engaged in activities to ensure continuous control over materials, facilities, services, and products.
  • Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring quality activities, such as preparation of expenditure records, progress reports, etc., in order to inform management of current status of those activities.
  • Plans, promotes, and organizes training activities relative to quality control.
  • Investigates customer complaints regarding quality and takes appropriate actions.
  • Reports to management on the performance of the quality system, any non-compliance issues, and recommended actions.
  • Provides vision and guidance in regards to the organization's Quality Management System to various departmental managers and other personnel to ensure that quality performance measures are established and utilized within the operations of the organization.
  • Assists in developing and implementing department policies and procedures to ensure consistent application of the quality policies and procedures of the Quality Management System.
  • Provides the Production Manager with regular communication relative to quality assurance issues, investigation of defects, corrective action, and other such tasks while maintaining cognizance of production delivery schedules.
  • Manages various quality control systems such as inspection and test, calibration, nonconformance processing, internal/external corrective action, and supplier corrective action.
  • Manages and maintains the inspection and product release function for product through receiving inspection, in-process inspection & test, and final inspection operations. Develops and initiates associated methods and procedures within manufacturing operations by assisting manufacturing engineering and planning efforts in work instruction development, review, and approval.
  • Prepares and/or coordinates training activities and certification programs for Quality Inspectors, Quality Engineers, Lab Technicians and, as needed, production employees on the quality aspects of production processes and procedures required to satisfy internal and external training requirements.
  • Develops methods, procedures, and forms for documenting, analyzing, and reporting quality data. Establishes and maintains record retention activities for managing such quality documentation.
  • Develops and implements QRB/MRB systems and procedures for the control and disposition of nonconforming material.
  • Manages and/or supports various auditing activities of internal quality systems and procedures relative to lSO9001/AS9100 and Nadcap including third party audits, customer audits, and special process certifications.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective Supplier Quality Assurance system, such as maintenance of the supplier register, purchase order review, source inspection, supplier surveys/audits, and working with suppliers regarding quality issues and problem resolution efforts.
  • Provides technical assistance to customers, functioning as the primary contact for quality issues. Responsibilities include coordination of responses to quality concerns, requests for corrective action, interpretation and negotiation of drawings, specifications, and standards, and negotiation of quality related charges.
  • Develops and manages quality departmental budgets.
  • Recruits department staff, evaluates employee performance, and recommends or initiates promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action. Interprets company policy to departmental employees and enforces company policy and practices. Conducts performance reviews and establishes goals and objectives for all staff within the Quality Assurance Department.
  • Coaches and develops the Quality Engineering and Quality Inspection staff in basic and advanced quality engineering methodologies as well as compliance to all company policies, procedures and customer requirements.
Position Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a scientific, managerial, engineering or quality assurance discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional certifications (e.g.: American Society for Quality Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), or Certified Quality Manger (COMgr) preferred.
  • Prior Work Experience: A minimum of 5 years experience in a Quality Assurance Engineering or Management environment, preferably in aerospace/military manufacturing, assembly, inspection, Quality Engineering, and/or aerospace composites manufacturing. Experience with quality systems such as ISO 9000/AS9100, Continuous improvement methodologies in an aerospace (preferably military defense, aerospace) environment. Demonstrated management experience with responsibility for direct reports in Quality Engineering and Inspection positions. Quality system auditing experience. Prior experience dealing with personnel matters including recruitment, employee development and mentorship performance evaluation and discipline. Experience interacting with regulatory authorities. Working knowledge of the design control processes. Experience with statistical sampling plans and trending analyses. Knowledgeable about electronic data management.
  • Computer Skills: Good computer skills including MS Office, including capability and experience in all types of quality data analysis, charting and reporting.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written), with diverse audiences both internally and externally, and conduct well structured meetings and training sessions
  • Additional Skills: Ability to lead projects and programs with a positive \"Get It Done\" attitude. Organized, attentive to detail, and able to prioritize and handle multiple projects with competing deadlines. Able to work efficiently both on independent basis and as part of a team. Ability to deal effectively with all levels within the organization as well as with external parties, including regulatory bodies. Proven strong problem solving ability with attention to root cause. Maintains a personal and professional \"continual improvement\" philosophy. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • The Quality Manager should also be familiar with management tools for problem solving, process management and various metrics, employing such problem solving tools to determine root causes and suggest solutions from various perspectives using data to make decisions. Problem solving tools include:
    • The Seven Quality Tools using Pareto charts, cause and effect diagrams, flowcharts, control charts, check sheets, scatter diagrams and histograms.
    • Process improvement tools using root cause analysis, PDCA, six sigma DMAIC model, failure mode and effects analysis and statistical process control.
    • Innovation and creativity tools using creative decision making and problem solving techniques that include brainstorming, mind mapping, lateral thinking, critical thinking and design for six sigma.
    • Cost of Quality using prevention, appraisal, internal and external failure costs to suggest ways and means to improve the bottom line.
