The Position
The Application Engineer is the subject matter expert for welding filler metal products. This role supports and enables our Sales Reps as a technical expert on National Standards Products to cultivate and grow NS Welding. Will be responsible for the development and improvement of welding filler metals and in assisting key departments on various projects and assignments.
Job Description
Primary Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
• Manage and performing welding with all arc welding process and base materials.
• Prepare and weld test coupons for various wire certifications, product evaluations, quality testing and customer samples.
• Performing tests on various filler metals for qualification and process evaluation (Examples: feedability, weldability).
• Evaluate the impact of wire manufacturing experiments on welding.
• Coordinate with and managing outside testing laboratories to perform destructive and non-destructive testing, heat treatment, diffusible hydrogen testing, chemical analysis, and all other related testing.
• Performing in-house tests on weld samples.
• Preparing weld samples for metallographic examination.
• Photographing and rating samples per standard and new procedures.
• Working with outside labs to perform SEM/XPS and AA analytical methods to obtain test results for sample characterization and problem solving.
• Documenting test results and producing necessary reports and graphs.
• Maintaining welding laboratory, including managing consumables, filler metals and equipment.
• Developing weldability comparison scoring and evaluation tools for benchmarking. Conducting tests and analyzing results in support of the company's competitive benchmarking program.
• Obtaining or renewing governmental, industry and customer certifications (Examples: Military, DOT, Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and American Welding Society (AWS)).
• Evaluate and qualify new products.
• Responsible for implementing Lean Tools, including 5S for National Standard's Welding Laboratory.
• Participating in special projects as required (Example: development of a new welding laboratory for National Standard).
• Supporting the field sales organization with strategic customer visits and interaction with key welding personnel at these customers.
• Conducting sales demonstrations and providing weld samples
• Assisting customers with weld failure analysis, root cause analysis and in developing corrective actions.
• Assisting customers with filler metal selection.
• Customer process improvements (elimination of spatter, weld cosmetics, penetration profiles).
• AWS involvement - Locally or as required nationally.
• Development and implementation of welding procedures.
• Evaluate and qualify potential new suppliers.
• Assist sales reps with weld cost analysis.
• Participate in technical committees (e.g., with manufacturing, quality, sales, product management, and finance).
Background Requirements
• The qualified candidate must have a strong background in welding, specifically Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).
• Knowledge of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).
• A BS degree in Welding Engineering or similar degree required with a minimum of five years of experience.
• Attention to detail and personal computer skills are required.
• Knowledge of AWS specifications, or other codes/standards, required.
• Customer relations experience.
• CWI and or, CWE certification desired
Job Requirements
• Education/Experience: Master's or Bachelor's degree or equivalent; five plus related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Communication Skills: Ability to effectively and concisely write technical reports. Ability to communicate both internally and externally using all forms of communication.
• Presentation Skills: Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.
• Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
• Math Ability: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity analysis.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
• Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software and manufacturing software.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
