Summary Statement

Maintains and repairs City of Boise swimming pool water quality systems, mechanical and plumbing equipment, pool site amenities, and park grounds. Operates, maintains, and repairs pool pumps, filter systems, controllers, chemical feeders, and boilers. Develops and implements pool mechanical operation procedures and inspection schedule. Works with independent discretion in decision making under general supervision.

Essential Functions

Performs, oversees and directs the operational procedures for maintaining the water chemical balance of all City of Boise pools. Monitors and maintains pool water quality and temperature. Performs multiple chemical testing and balancing procedures of pool water. Applies disinfectants to destroy microorganisms in the pool water from human and environmental contamination. Trains pool staff to assist with water chemistry maintenance. Handles liquid and dry chemicals in addition to establishing dosing quantities. Inspects and maintains chemical controllers, chlorine gas feed systems, chemical injection pumps and plumbing systems. (30%)

Inspects and repairs pool structural components, mechanical equipment, and plumbing and circulation systems to ensure safe site facilities. Checks flow and turnover rates of circulating and filtering water. Cleans and replaces filters. Maintains and repairs pumps, high rate sand filtration systems, plumbing, pool vacuum systems, surge/balance tanks, flow meters, gauges and valves. Ensures pool anti-entrapment drain covers are installed and all engineering requirements are enforced. Renovates and maintains diving boards, pool slides and hydro tubes. Makes repairs to the hard surface slip-resistant areas on the pool deck. Ensures all safety requirements are followed for the use of personal protective equipment in the handling of hazardous chemicals. Controls safety of onsite pool chemical storage, purchase, transportation, and disposal. Provides daily inspections of each pool facility to ensure they are maintained in a clean and safe manner. Plans for and performs year-round facility maintenance projects on park building structures, electrical and lighting systems, locker rooms, drinking water fountains, showers and restrooms. Performs seasonal maintenance of turf irrigation systems. Trains and oversees infrastructure seasonal maintenance staff. (30%)

Maintains record keeping of daily inspections. Prepares for scheduled and random site inspections. Ensures all operational records are properly documented. Writes and updates standard procedures for pool management. Trains seasonal pool staff in regulatory requirements and pool operation procedures. Maintains inventory audit and provides information for department budget. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience in swimming pool maintenance and operation, building and structure repair, and grounds keeping.

Functional knowledge of swimming pool water chemistry requirements and chemical safety procedures; pool and building mechanical and electrical systems; methods, practices, tools and materials used in structural repair to buildings and plumbing maintenance and repair work; turf maintenance; repair to hard surface areas involving carpentry, masonry, concrete, and metal working.

Ability to maintain and troubleshoot pool system components; perform basic computer operations; program and operate computerized pool and irrigation systems; operate hand and power tools such as table saw, hot saw, chop saw, band saw, arc welder, plasma torch, generator, compressor, portable pump, and sand blaster; make decisions and delegate tasks to seasonal maintenance staff; make emergency repairs to equipment and facilities; consult industry publications for current information regarding equipment, legislative changes, liability concerns, and pool management practices; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City of Boise employees and the public; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Five years experience in swimming pool operation and maintenance, scuba diving open water certification, Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification.

Licensing And Other Requirements
Valid Idaho driver's license.
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) issued by the National Swimming Pool Foundation.
The following certifications are issued through the City of Boise and must be obtained within six weeks of employment:
Confined Space Certification
Chemical Safety Certification
First Aid and CPR Certification

Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:

City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision and depth perception. Employees will stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include outdoor weather conditions. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals.
This position works: a rotating on-call schedule.
