Job Duties:
Academic Support

  • Manage the undergraduate evening tutoring program, including the recruitment and supervision of Engineering Tutor staff (lead tutors, tutors, and receptionists) and monitoring the program budget.
  • Develop and coordinate engineering study tables / groups to serve engineering students in all required core courses including those outside the College.
  • Serve as the primary contact in the College of Engineering for the Excelling@Iowa early alert system. Utilize data to manage processes for early identification of students facing academic challenges and coordinate outreach and response systems to support advisors (both faculty and staff) in communicating with these students.
  • Coordinate and promote the academic and developmental skills workshop series offered each semester.
  • Assess academic support programs (Engineering Tutoring and study tables) and consult with faculty teaching required Engineering courses to guide continued program development and recommend services based on needs of the student population.

Academic Advising
  • Provide academic advising, individually and in groups, for new and current undergraduate engineering students regarding registration, College policies, programs of study, degree and career options, and progress toward degree. Convey curricular information and assist students in course selection in support of their goals and interests.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources and offices (collegiate and campus) for help with personal issues, tutoring, testing and placement, career advising, study abroad, and financial aid.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with assigned program faculty, staff, and directors to understand and clarify departmental expectations, maintain current knowledge of degree programs, curriculum changes and requirements, etc.
  • Assist the College Registrar with evaluating transcripts, conducting degree audits, authorizing advising forms, completing graduation checks, etc.
  • Participate in summer/winter orientation for new first-year and transfer students.

Position Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Reasonable (1-3 years) experience in a student services role supporting undergraduate success such as academic advising, academic support and retention, admission counseling, career advising, residence life, student life or similar.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills: strong professional writing, public speaking, interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, organized, and proactive in completing work assignments.
  • Ability to occasionally work evening hours Sunday-Thursday during the academic year.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence through diversity, equity and inclusion.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in student development or related area.
  • Academic advising experience.
  • Experience supervising student employees.
  • Program development/management experience in a higher education setting.
  • Professional experience and/or a degree in a STEM discipline.
  • Familiarity with University of Iowa policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment for prospective and current students.
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment.
