Job Summary
The Assistant Director of ICI Operations has the primary responsibility to coordinate ICI's technical operations activities (e.g., computing, infrastructure, data storage, networking, cybersecurity, database services) to ensure the reliable and optimized delivery of those services to NCSA projects and partners. The incumbent will achieve this through developing operational standards and processes, ensuring robust management practices are employed across ICI, and by working closely with the ICI Associate Director and project teams that fund ICI staff to support and advance NCSA's cyberinfrastructure. The Assistant Director of ICI Operations has as direct reports all ICI operational/technical team leads (e.g., computing, infrastructure, data storage, networking, cybersecurity, database services).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operations (70%)
    • Supervise technical operations managers within ICI, which currently includes computing, infrastructure, data storage, networking, cybersecurity, database services teams
    • Coordinate ICI staffing activities with NCSA Human Resources and Business Office
    • Monitor staffing needs across the directorate, including hiring, recruitment, and retention of technical staff
    • Lead ICI staff performance evaluation and management activities
    • Work with ICI Senior Program Manager to ensure the ICI staff plan meets team and project staffing requirements
    • Lead ICI Promotion and Equity planning activities
    • In partnership with team managers, maintain long-term plans for ICI Operations staff career development and technical training activities that meet the objectives of NCSA major projects and initiatives
    • Coordinate Management and Leadership training for ICI, including mentoring new managers of the ICI technical operations teams
  • Strategic Leadership (20%)
    • Direct and oversee the delivery of technical, operational services within the Integrated Cyberinfrastructure (ICI) Directorate
    • Contribute to strategic planning initiatives, led by the ICI Associate Director, that advance NCSA and ICI toward their strategic goals
    • Work closely with ICI Associate Director to develop and advance a shared direction for ICI technical operations
    • Review and recommend changes to NCSA's and ICI's operating policies and procedures
    • Collaborate with staff at all levels across NCSA on the delivery of technical and operational solutions that advance the mission of center
    • Act on behalf to the ICI Director when they are unavailable
  • Financial Management (10%)
    • Work closely with the ICI Associate Director and ICI Senior Program Manager on the development the ICI annual budget
    • Ensure ICI operations teams remain within budget and on target to spend funds as planned during the annual budgeting process
    • Work closely with the ICI Senior Program Manager on the budgetary planning related to management of the ICI Staff Plan
Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in the fields of science, engineering, or business. Alternative degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent, relevant experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to current NCSA activities). • 10 years' required experience in operations of production-level research cyberinfrastructure services, resources, and/or advanced technology environments that supports scientific and engineering research needs. • 5 years' experience in the management of technical personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • • Experience in leading and participating in cyberinfrastructure (CI) development and deployment activities within a production quality HPC environment. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Strong organizational skills. • Ability to deal with a diverse stakeholder community including technical staff, faculty, administrators, and representatives of industrial partners. • Training and/or certifications in professional management practices for technical staff • Experience in development of comprehensive staff technical training programs that advance organizational objectives • Experience in developing and implementing staff performance management plans
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/1/2024. Salary is commensurate with experience. The expected minimum salary is $140,000.
