Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Creative Computing

Location:
Hanover, NH
Open Date:
Aug 24, 2023
Description:

The Computer Science Department at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek qualified candidates who will enhance the department's existing graduate and undergraduate Digital Arts programs and their intersections with departmental strengths in Visual Computing, Music Computing, Extended/Augmented/Virtual Reality, Robotics, and Machine Learning. Applicants should have a track record of publications in a CS-related field-such as creative computing, Generative Art/Music, Graphics, or Robotics-as well as examples of work addressing creative areas, including but limited to: AR/VR/XR, game design, computer graphics, computer music, creative AI/generative art, 3D fabrication, interactive digital arts, tangible media, or other digital media.

Our department is home to 24 tenure-track faculty members, and is committed to growing that number by 50% over the next decade. The position will be located within the recently opened Class of 1982 Engineering and Computer Science Center which brings together under one roof computer scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, digital artists, designers, the DALI Lab, and electronic musicians. The new hire will have latitude to design new courses and build out research areas. The CS Major is one of the fastest growing majors in the university, and has vibrant MS and PhD programs with students publishing at the top journals and conferences. Our graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are supported by the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, including their diversity and inclusion initiatives. In addition, the CS department hosts the Digital Arts program-a unique mix of creative digital arts courses, technical visual computing courses, and research. Undergraduates can major in Computer Science modified with Digital Arts or Human Centered Design, minor in Digital Arts or modify any other major with Digital Arts. The MS program in Computer Science with a Concentration in Digital Arts is growing rapidly and gaining a strong reputation. There are strong collaborations between Digital Arts and departments throughout Arts and Sciences, as well as Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Tuck School of Business, and Thayer School of Engineering. We are especially interested in applicants who have a demonstrated ability to contribute to Dartmouth's diversity initiatives in STEM research, such as the Wright Center for the Study of Computation and Just Communities, Women in Science Program, E. E. Just STEM Scholars Program, and Academic Summer Undergraduate Research Experience.

The Computer Science Department and Dartmouth are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive population of students, faculty, and staff. Dartmouth recently launched a new initiative, Toward Equity, that embraces shared definitions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as a foundation for our success in institutional transformation. We are especially interested in applicants who are able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and with different identities and attributes. Applicants should provide a statement addressing how their teaching, research, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This statement will be evaluated as part of the selection process.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field, or be All But Dissertation (ABD) with degree conferred by the start of the appointment. Effective classroom teaching is essential for this position.

Application Instructions:

Applicants are encouraged to spell out plans for building a vigorous research program, to elucidate ideas for effective classroom teaching and mentoring, and to discuss goals for contributing to the growth and support of a diverse community of students and scholars on our campus. Please submit all application materials via Interfolio:
