Job Summary

The Program in Environmental Design (ENVD) invites applications for two full-time tenure-track faculty positions, at the Assistant Professor level, with an intended start date of fall 2023. ENVD at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) is an interdisciplinary program where we explore the intersections of architecture, environmental product design, landscape architecture, urban design and city and regional planning in order to address our world's most pressing social and environmental issues.

Candidates must demonstrate potential for excellence and leadership in interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching related to the fields of environmental design (including architecture, environmental product design, landscape architecture, urban design, city and regional planning, as well as interdisciplinary disciplines or adjacent fields). Scholarship may include evidence of, or potential for, nationally and internationally recognized publication, exhibition, community engagement, and other creative forms of impact. Ideal candidates will demonstrate potential for research fundraising.

We seek candidates who bring excellence and innovation to teaching studio, lecture, and seminar courses as well as provide support to the core curriculum, which covers general knowledge in environmental design disciplines. Simultaneously, candidates will be expected to enhance ENVD's curriculum with advanced seminar and studio offerings.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

CU Boulder is a leading research university with some of the highest rates of research impact globally (as measured through funding and dissemination). The region is home to leading research institutes and foundations dedicated to radically progressing society’s imperatives to address social and environmental problems. Faculty at CU have access to, and collaborate with, national and international institutes housed in Boulder, throughout Colorado, and beyond. With a history of social and environmental activism in Boulder and Colorado we operate with a keen awareness of struggles unaddressed and emerging. The spirit of creative and impact-driven dedication to address social and environmental injustices is a hallmark of CU Boulder and a defining aspect of ENVD’s culture. In this context, ENVD is committed to elevating new forms of research in the environmental design fields.

ENVD (http://www.colorado.edu/envd/) is located at the confluence of dynamic social and breathtaking ecological systems. ENVD has been cultivating interdisciplinary thinkers, designers, and planners for over 50 years. We have more than 4,300 alumni. As one of the most in-demand programs on the Boulder campus, we attract accomplished and passionate students. Our interdisciplinary curriculum embraces creativity, critical thinking and practice. Our work spans scales from human-scale environmental product design to regional development planning. We provide a rigorous but supportive environment for our students and faculty. We are renowned for graduating environmental designers who integrate knowledge of the built and natural environments in creative and critical ways.

We are currently developing a Master’s program in Environmental Design that will expand upon this area of excellence, and we seek new faculty who can contribute to this program.

We are committed to shaping an equitable future for environmental design professions and scholarship. We aim to uphold and exceed CU’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. ENVD holds as imperative the need to develop a thriving faculty body that represents, in identity and commitment, the values and identities of the communities we seek to serve. We acknowledge that ENVD, housed in a predominantly white institution, and in predominantly white and affluent regional communities, stands to perpetuate patterns of exclusion and inequity that are prevalent in higher education. This recognition drives us to more aggressively pursue leadership in establishing an academic unit that models diversity, inclusion, equity, and ultimately, justice.

As a growing program, ENVD offers opportunities for leadership roles for more advanced faculty.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Tenure-track faculty at ENVD are expected to maintain an active research agenda and to teach at all levels of the curriculum. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate potential for a high degree of societal and/or environmental impact through the dissemination of their research and creative work at regional and national and/or international levels. Candidates are also expected to enhance undergraduate scholarly endeavors in addition to training students for careers in professional and emerging fields of praxis.

What You Should Know

  • A typical workload for tenure-track faculty is 40% Research, 40% Teaching and 20% Service. This generally translates to: Research: an active portfolio of research and creative work as measured by such standards as exhibition, publishing, grants, and awards; Teaching: teaching four courses per year including a combination of studios, lectures and seminars; and Service: participation on department committees and in department governance as well as service at the campus and field (nationally and/or internationally) levels.
  • As part of the University of Colorado Boulder’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, the campus has implemented a reference check pilot program with respect to final candidates for tenured faculty appointments. The reference check pilot program is intended to allow CU Boulder to collect and review information about a candidate's conduct at their current and previous institutions, specifically conduct related to sexual misconduct, harassment, and/or discrimination – before making hiring decisions. All final candidates for tenured faculty appointments are required to complete an Authorization to Release Information.
  • The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
