Job Description

The Assistant Vice President for Financial Planning and Budget (AVP) reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration and will work closely with the senior leadership of the College and the Board of Trustees to enable the implementation of the strategic priorities of the institution. This role is responsible for developing and directing effective budget and planning processes, performing high quality financial analyses and financial modeling along with actionable recommendations, and communicating financial information and insights to department and program leaders, the senior leadership, and Board of Trustees. Proactively work with department leaders to improve financial outcomes.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • The AVP will strengthen the College's budgeting and financial planning and support strategic decision-making by developing a comprehensive understanding of the financial complexities and competing needs of the organization, and developing useful and robust analyses and long-term financial models to inform discussions of critical issues.

  • Develops strong, collaborative relationships with senior leadership, department and program administrators, faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees. Communicates effectively regarding the financial health of the organization in the context of the strategic priorities of the College.

  • Partners with the AVP for Finance and Controller to ensure the overall management of the financial functions of the College. Works closely with the Chief Human Resources Officer to ensure budget alignment and support for the recruitment, hiring and retention of all employees. Works closely with the AVP for Facilities Management and Planning to ensure budget alignment and support for operational services, deferred maintenance projects and major capital improvements.

  • Performs financial analyses in key operating revenue and expense areas to identify key drivers, trends, benchmarks, risks and opportunities, and recommends appropriate actions. Develops and presents financial reports, metrics and analyses to increase understanding and improve decision-making.

  • Develops and leads an operating and capital budget process that is holistic and transparent to meet the current and future needs of Wellesley College. Works with senior leaders to provide budgetary and analytic support to optimize the deployment of resources. Proactively works with department leaders to improve financial outcomes.

  • Works closely with the Provost's office to support development and management of the budget for the academic program, including faculty staffing, departmental budgets, and support for institutes and centers. Provides support to the Provost's office in determining optimal funding sources for academic program priorities and maximizing the use of endowed funds.

  • Leads efforts by identifying and engaging with division, department and program leaders to implement changes in processes and systems to improve service and cost effectiveness in support of Wellesley's programs and mission.

  • Collaborates with the AVP for Facilities Management and Planning to support the College's ten-year campus renewal program. Works closely with the Director of Planning, Design and Construction and the Facilities Manager of Financial and Administrative Services to ensure the deferred maintenance and campus renewal program remains on budget and is accurately accounted for on the income statement and balance sheet. Enhances the financial modeling and reporting of sources and uses underlying this multi-year plan.

  • Staffs the Budget Advisory Committee (BAC), a committee of Academic Council composed of faculty, staff and students. This committee is charged with advising the President on key budgetary matters.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required, MBA or other Finance or related graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 7-10 years progressively responsible experience in financial management, resource planning, financial analysis and budget development; experience in financial management for not-for-profit organization preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial accounting; experience with non-profit accounting and endowment management strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in leading and managing financial and budget matters at a complex organization; experience in higher education strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success providing high quality analysis and recommendations that influenced outcomes and improved financial outcomes across functions.
  • Ability to communicate financial information and insights directly and effectively to a variety of audiences; ability to link financial information to strategic priorities of the institution.
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively and building effective working relationships at all levels and across functions of the organization; models and practices positive and inclusive leadership; comfortable and confident in engaging with others in managing change.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish credibility and trust with broad and diverse constituencies within a complex organization based upon integrity, critical thinking, outstanding work ethic and operational performance, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced-level MS Office skills, especially Excel (pivot tables, macros, vlookups). Workday Experience strongly preferred
