The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign has an opening for a Assistant Director, Academic Services.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic Development (percentage of time: 40%)

  • Provide clear, consistent communication on a frequent basis with academic counseling staff members and athletic coaches about the progress of assigned student-athletes
  • Assist in the development and delivery of learning strategy programming for student athletes
  • Provide an individualized program to meet the desired academic and personal development goals
  • Teach compensatory techniques to help students understand their learning strengths and weaknesses to foster academic success
  • Create summer transition programming for at-risk student athletes in conjunction with the student-athlete summer course
  • Facilitate and provide guidance and direction for workshop development and implementation through Student-Athlete Development program
  • Coordinate all summer screening needs for incoming student-athletes and have ability to read screening results
  • Develop and maintain an academic resource library for all student-athletes, focusing specifically on study skills and test-taking strategies.

Strategic Engagement (percentage of time: 30%)
  • Serve as a resource for Irwin Academics staff, coaches and Athletics Department in the areas of learning development, disability information, and referral.
  • Provide training and skill development seminars for students and staff as requested
  • Assist with coordinating the academic coach program for at-risk student-athlete population, including hiring, training, and evaluation of the staff
  • Coordinate and implement, in conjunction with professional academic advising staff, individualized academic support plan for identified student-athletes
  • Assist in hiring, training, assigning work and evaluating performance of interns and student staff
  • Participate in overall planning and presenting at summer and fall new and transfer student orientation programs
  • Work compatibly and cooperatively with all personnel within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and on the University of Illinois campus
  • Serve as liaison to campus resources such as disability services and counseling center
  • Supervise, training and evaluate other learning specialists
  • Coordinate all educational testing needs
  • Serve as liaison to both DRES and sports med office and attend those units periodic staff meetings
  • Work with director to assess software and technology needs for all student-athletes and provide guidance on department technology needs

Individual Student Assessment (percentage of time: 30%)
  • Assess and evaluate students' academic needs to determine and provide additional academic support services with study skills, note taking, organizational skills, time management skills, test-taking strategies, and in the areas of literacy skill development.
  • Assist in monitoring of academic progress for student athletes
  • Work in conjunction with Campus units to review and implement individual student athlete 504 plans and Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and psychoeducational assessments. Ability to read, create, and assist with implementation of plans for students based on the information
  • Assist in evaluating recruits in areas related to academics, in addition serve as resource to families of recruits
  • Serve as direct contact with Sports Psychology and Disability Resources & Educational Services office for initial screening and testing of student-athletes
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required: Master's degree in Education required (Special Education, Educational Psychology, Counseling, other related programs).

Experience:

Required: Three - Five years' experience as a learning specialist in a Division I athletic academic unit. Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Experience working with NCAA Division I student-athletes. Experience working with at-risk student-athletes

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Preferred: Supervisory experience of learning assistants. Must possess knowledge and expertise in effective learning strategies, assessment tools, motivational techniques, and study skill development. Experience and knowledge of regulations and laws associated with ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and accommodations with diagnosed learning disabilities.

Salary will be commensurate with experience
