The Associate Director of Narrative will report to the Executive Director, work closely with the Senior Faculty Chair of Narrative, and work within an interdisciplinary team to execute and enhance Office projects and processes to support the Office of Narrative and CAR in achieving its overall vision, mission, and objectives. The Associate Director of Narrative will be responsible for managing daily operations of the Office to meet standards, deadlines, and budgets across projects, initiatives, and teams.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Project management and execution:
    • With guidance from the Executive Director and Senior Faculty Chair, implement the strategic plan of the Office; oversee the planning, execution, and coordination of the Offices multiple projects and initiatives to ensure quality control and on-time completion; develop projects and collaborations; and provide regular updates to the Executive Director and Center Leadership about the progress of the Office.
  • Substantive contribution:
    • The Associate Director will contribute substantively to the work of the Office, including collaboratively working with the Senior Faculty Chair on analysis, research direction, strategy, and evaluation. The Associate Director will lead report development and writing and presentation development and delivery. The Associate Director will also provide feedback on work products and serve on substantive committees.
  • Supervision of workflow and personnel:
    • The Associate Director will supervise the workflow of Office staff, including Assistant Directors, full-time staff, fellows, and student interns, as well as the performance and professional development of full-time personnel within the Office. The Associate Director will also ensure proper staffing for Office projects and will oversee hiring of staff, part-time faculty, and interns and delegation of supervisory duties.
  • Internal collaborations:
    • Under the direction of the Senior Faculty Chair, the Associate Director will contribute substantively to research and other efforts within and across Offices to advance the mission of CAR; activities include but are not limited to co-authorship of reports, serving on committees, and co-convening/co-presenting on Office progress and products.
  • External collaborations and development:
    • The Associate Director will represent the Office in communications and meetings with external faculty, students, and BU and non-BU stakeholders interested in collaborations; work with the Senior Faculty Chair to pursue and manage grants and gifts, including meetings with funders and program officers; develop concept notes and budgets; and draft reports to funders and program officers.
  • Budget monitoring:
    • In collaboration with the Centers finance personnel, the Associate Director will oversee proper budgeting of Office funds and resources and provide budget updates and reports to Center Leadership.
Required Skills

Master's Degree in relevant field required; Doctoral degree preferred. A minimum of 5-8+ years of full-time work experience and established record of supervising full-time personnel and project management are required.

The successful candidate will have expertise in research on racist narratives and how to counter them with antiracist narratives, experience in storytelling for movement building, and experience with narrative change campaigns and strategies. The successful candidate will also be experienced in leading, managing, and cultivating teams of individuals; managing multiple complex projects; highly organized, self-directed, and skilled at prioritizing and problem-solving; effective at communications (verbal and written), and detailed-oriented.
