Associate Director Translational Medicine, Haematology

With a combination-focused pipeline that exploits the power of six scientific platforms (Immuno-Oncology, Tumor Drivers and Resistance, DNA Damage Response, Antibody-drug Conjugates, Cell Therapy and Epigenetics) to help address unmet clinical needs in a host of haematological cancers, we are motivated by a dedication to the scientific discovery and collaboration that will one day help eliminate cancer as a cause of death. This unit has responsibility for the value chain from discovery through to late-stage development, enabling rapid acceleration of promising early-stage assets and life-cycle management programs. This role can located be in South San Francisco, CA or Waltham/Boston, MA

Translational Medicine function exists within Haematology R&D to ensure effective and strategic biomarker studies for Haematology & Oncology project teams. Closely interacting with the pre-clinical Discovery, Clinical Development, and Precision Medicine & Biosamples diagnostics functions, Haematology Translational Medicine team is the single point of accountability for delivery of robust, scientifically-driven biomarker strategy to all Haematology project teams, providing feasibility assessments, technical validation, centralized biomarker analysis capability for clinical samples, delivery of translational data and early clinical phase engagement.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • In partnership with other AstraZeneca R&D teams, Design, develop and execute Translational Medicine Strategy for one or more early or late-stage Haematology programs.
  • Activities include such as development of clinical translational plans and budget, TM data review, analysis and interpretation, preparation of TM study reports and presentations to leadership, and writing of TM portion of protocols and lab manuals etc.,
  • Represent TM function at project teams, ad boards, investigator meetings and HA interactions to communicate and advance translational clinical biomarker objectives.
  • Collaborate with Haematology TM Cancer Biomarker Development and the Genomic unit to drive scientific and technical innovation.
  • Employ new and existing data tools to clean, process, analyze and visualize biomarker datasets.
  • Review, organize and interpret biomarker data in connection with biomarker hypotheses developed based on the drug mechanism(s) of action, the target biology and the disease biology.
  • Implement innovative biomarkers for Haematology clinical studies based on the best available science and emerging technologies.
  • Understanding of key cancer pathway interactions and feedback mechanisms in clinical samples to inform ongoing clinical trials including combination studies.
  • Define novel mechanisms of clinical resistance
  • Interactions with external contractors (eg. CROs)

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD with 2+ yrs of experience OR a Masters degree with 7+ yrs of experience
  • Haematology-Oncology training is required
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant clinical translational research experience in Pharma/Biotech industry
  • Proven communication and data presentation skills.
  • Experience in biomarker data analytics and the use of analytical tools
  • Familiarity with programming and algorithm development is a plus
  • Highly developed problem solving and risk management skills
  • Demonstrated track record of driving, managing, executing and delivering results for complex multi-functional projects.
  • Highly collaborative working skills
  • Ability to act as an external ambassador and to influence external organizations to enhance the image and reputation of AstraZeneca
