Summary of the Group

The Flow Cytometry group is part of Dynamic Omics/ Centre for Genomics Research (CGR) and Discovery Sciences within AstraZeneca and works across all therapeutic areas including Oncology; Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM); Respiratory and Immunology (R&I); Vaccines and Immunotherapies (V&I); Neurosciences, and Rare Diseases. Our team supports over 450 scientists globally and delivers key data to projects across all phases of the drug discovery and development. We work across all modalities from small molecules to biologics. The Global Flow Cytometry Center of Excellence is among the leading flow cytometry organizations in the US and UK, and includes state-of-the-art instrumentation equipped with cutting-edge technology and the requisite expertise.

What you'll do

In this role, you will support the operations of the team initially in Waltham, MA, and participate in collaborations with multiple therapeutic areas. In 2026, the team will relocate to Kendall Square in Cambridge to our new Boston R&D headquarters. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work and grow in a fast-paced environment under the supervision of senior staff members.

In this role, you will serve as a primary resource to:

• Oversee and drive daily and long-term flow cytometry operations in conjunction with local flow cytometry and site leaders to ensure proper maintenance of the instruments and training of the new hires, aligned with global flow cytometry leadership

• Provide support for drug discovery projects through assistance with experimental design, flow cytometry techniques, and data analysis for pre-clinical and clinical studies

• Oversee development of innovative projects; contribute to practical delivery of project goals by providing expert advice and interpreting complex data

• Demonstrate excellent collaborative efforts with multiple therapeutic areas focusing on innovative immunology/flow cytometry projects and automation solutions to meet overall strategic objectives

• Demonstrate excellent proactive problem-solving skills to identify issues, take appropriate actions and seek guidance when needed

• Summarize data for presentations, reports, and publications with accountability for accuracy. Review and approve flow cytometry data and reports to ensure quality and integrity

• Demonstrate broad understanding of current and emerging technologies in cellular analyses, with a keen perspective of how novel approaches might fit across each of the supported Therapeutic Areas

• Ensure own work, and work of team, is aligned with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulation

• Ability to gain trust from key collaborators in the Therapeutic Areas

Education & Experience Requirements:

• PhD degree (or equivalent experience) in Immunology, Bioinformatics, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline with 5+ years of experience, or a Master with +8 years of directly relevant outstanding performance

Essential Criteria

• Experience with setting goals and objectives, motivating and developing scientists is highly desirable

• Well-developed understanding of flow cytometry, cell sorting and immunology, following best industry practises

• Experience with a variety of flow cytometry data analysis and bioinformatic tools, including FlowJo, FCS Express, OMIQ, Cytobank and/or programming with Python or R

• Lead collaborations and advance projects by standardizing the design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data from of our preclinical and clinical studies, and summary of experimental results for presentations, review for accuracy and write reports and high-quality/high impact scientific publications

• Strong multi-tasking, time management, organizational skills and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

Desirable Criteria

• Experience with multiomic integration and working with data scientists creating data analysis platforms is highly desirable

• Significant experience in the pharmaceutical industry and drug discovery process

• Experience with establishing automated lab processes is desirable

• Microscopy experience is a plus
