Job Summary:
This position is being recruited at either the Assistant or Associate Director level. If position is filled at the Associate Director level, there will be additional responsibilities for the overall management of the Career Services office and team. The additional duties, responsibilities, and qualifications of the Associate Director are outlined separately.

The Assistant or Associate Director for Career Development will:

  • Manage the team of advising liaisons in the Career Center. As such, the incumbent will work with the Director to set the mission, vision, goals, objectives, and policy for the Career Advising Team that align with those of the Career Services.
  • Recruit, train, manage, and conduct the required annual reviews for the advising team staff.
  • Serve as the liaison to one of EWU's four colleges. The incumbent will manage the Career Services relationship with that college and assure that their faculty, staff, and students are being served by Career Services at a level consistent with the other three Colleges.
  • Serve in an advising role, to the same standards held by the team members they supervise.


The incumbent must be able work occasional evenings and weekends to staff scheduled campus events.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years’ experience in higher education, counseling, advising, or career development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team
  • Evidence of strong computer skills including database knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience in building rapport with varied audiences, communities, and groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and making group presentations
  • Demonstrated familiarity with best practices in career development, related pedagogy, and information design
  • High level of cultural humility and experience working effectively with marginalized populations
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.


Associate Director Level – Additional Required Qualifications:
  • Four years’ experience in a student-services setting in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience in providing strategic vision and direction for a team or office


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree
  • Three or more years’ experience in a career or academic advising services setting
  • Two or more years supervisory experience
  • Certification in the Strong Interest Inventory, or willingness to obtain

Responsibility / Duty: Provide career advising services to EWU students
  • Advise, test and assess students, alumni, prospective students and staff to assist in making informed decisions regarding major and career goals
  • Deliver career advising presentations/trainings to students (classrooms, living groups, student organizations, etc.)
  • Design comprehensive program components to include assessment, occupation/labor market research and job search preparation
  • Train and inform students, alumni, prospective students and staff re: many aspects of career development
  • Collaborate with academic and student success departments to inform and support career development
  • Impact retention by reducing number of undecided students regarding their major and career plan through education, outreach and informed decision making
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity and engage in campus outreach and programming to students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds

Responsibility / Duty: Supervision
  • Hire and train career development staff regarding procedures, assignments, and industry best practices, enforce adherence to university, state, and fed. laws, rules and regulations
  • Supervise and schedule career development staff and monitor workloads to ensure services are maintained at effective levels
  • Develop and refine procedures and assignments to effectively utilize staffing resources
  • Provide professional development opportunities for career development staff
  • Oversee planning of career development programs and events such as workshops, group advising appointments, classroom presentations, club and organization engagements, and information sessions in concert with employers, community representatives, students and faculty
  • Direct staff responsible for events targeted to their assigned college/student population and oversee planning and implementation
  • Conduct annual reviews for assigned staff

Responsibility / Duty: Operations Management
  • Serve on the Career Services Leadership Team
  • Ensure compliance with laws, relations, policies and best practices pertaining to career plan and modify internal systems accordingly
  • Market the Career Center and its events to students, faculty and staff
  • Network and collaborate with career development staff and college units regarding student events, data, and trainings of common interest
  • Analyze career development program interventions by establishing/managing a tracking mechanism to measure program effectiveness
  • Generate quarterly and annual career development reports on services rendered, evaluate systems effectiveness, and assess how well the system meets university needs.
  • Oversee development of both web based and hard copy career development resources and reference material
  • Budget and formulate recommendations on the materials, software, and publications utilized as career development resources
  • Track utilization of career development resources and assess demand
  • Evaluate event effectiveness and assess programmatic needs

Responsibility / Duty: Associate Director Level -Additional Responsibilities:
  • Work with Director to develop the mission, vision, and goals for the Career Services team
  • Work with the Assistant Director for Employer Relations to ensure that employer relations and career development staff are one cohesive team, not two teams working in silos
  • Work with the Director to craft strategic initiatives for the office that lead to increased resource development, operational efficiencies, and service growth for existing and future stakeholders
  • Assume management and/or operational responsibility of Career Services in the absence of the Director

Conditions of Employment:

The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

Salary Information: The salary range for this position is $62,489 (minimum) up to $65,000. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience and skills.
