The Opportunity
The Automation Support Engineer is responsible for the installation of the Makino automated systems servicing Makino machining centers and other ancillary equipment. The automated systems utilize various automation products (robots, gantry systems, vision systems, marking systems, conveyance systems) to automate the flow of material through the Makino machining systems. The engineer will be responsible for the proper installation and startup of these systems at the customer location.

The support engineer will also be involved in assisting with the installation of custom and special options for use on Makino machining centers and equipment provided by Makino to support customer's requests. These options are widely varied in design and function, typically new and unique customer defined, and interface directly with the standard CNC machine tool and Makino supplied and supported equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, debug and support Makino developed and standard automated machining systems at Makino Mason and at customer locations. This includes mechanical and electrical installation of robots, robot grippers, cell controllers, interconnection cabling, safety fencing, conveyors, etc. It also includes the preparation of the site for the equipment such as marking the plant floor to show equipment position and directing plant or rigging personnel during the installation of the equipment.
  • Provide weekly reporting of completed installation tasks.
  • Install, debug and support Makino supplied 3rd party developed integrated solutions. This includes test stands, parts washers, and other types of ancillary support equipment.
  • Program/teach robots to service the Makino machining centers and ancillary equipment during the installation of the automated systems.
  • Make suggestions for changes and improvements as may be needed through field service activities and observations.
  • Perform testing and debug of new and revised versions of machine/automation control software at Makino Mason and at customer locations.
  • Support the installation/testing/servicing of Makino machining centers and associated options.
Required Skills
  • Mechanical and electrical controls aptitude. Must be able to read and understand mechanical and electrical engineering drawings for proper installation of systems and equipment.
  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to program and modify robotic automation (Fanuc/ABB).
  • Ability to read, understand, and modify PLC ladder logic (Allen Bradley/Omron/Mitsubishi).
  • Ability to communicate with engineering resources to resolve installation and startup issues.
  • Able to utilize MS Office products such as Word, Excel, etc.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills.
  • Willingness to travel. The work assignments are primarily at customer locations. Travel is expected to be 75% to 90%. Some travel to foreign countries may be required.
Education and/or Experience
  • Associates degree in engineering technology or;
  • 3+ years of experience with automation systems.
