St. Norbert College (SNC), a nationally-ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking a Baker for Ruth's Marketplace. This position performs a variety of baking duties and assists with the preparation and baking of breads, rolls, muffins, cookies, pies, cakes, doughnuts, biscuits, and other pastries in a high volume, large batch environment.

Specific responsibilities:

Prepare muffins, cookies, pies, cakes, doughnuts, biscuits, and other pastries, including icings according to established recipes. Measure, scale, mix and bake products in ovens according to proper procedures. Inspect quality during and after baking and make notes for recipe adjustments. Must be able to interpret and produce recipes in large volume. Must have a respect for detail, consistency and dedication to quality. - 60%

Assemble ingredients and equipment needed for daily baking activities.as defined by catering service orders and menus. Must adhere to standardized recipes, safe food handling procedures and allergen safety best practices. - 10%

Train and provide direction to student workers through excellent verbal and communication skills. - 5%

Work in general kitchen prep work production and deep cleaning during off peak times - 15%

Clean and maintain work areas, utensils, and equipment. Tend to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food products, detect and ensure LeanPathing of leftover food. Compiles production sheets in absence of Bakery Supervisor as required. - 10%

Performs additional duties as assigned and attend College required training. Works in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others, health and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the College or governmental authority. This position will also assist with general prep work on scheduled weekend rotation and during non-academic times of the year.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Education -

  • High School Diploma

Experience and Credentials -

  • 2 years of baking experience is preferred

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment

  • Ability to interact professionally with co-workers and customers, particularly in conflict situations

  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments

  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

  • Ability to exercise good judgement and decisions in an expeditious manner

  • Skilled at setting a good example for others

  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment

  • Must bring a positive attitude and good energy towards oneself and coworkers

Equipment Used:
Kitchen equipment, floor mixers, scales, ovens and knives, dishwasher

Working Conditions:
Regular work hours are M - F, 6:00 am - 2:00 pm, including every 6th weekend As the main food service on campus, we are considered "Essential Personnel". This requires staff to arrive for work on days where inclement weather closes other businesses and schools down.

  • The Baker duties are performed primarily in the bakery department within Michels Commons and occasionally at Bemis International Center. The bakery may be exposed to various temperature changes and work environments. Work includes walking, standing, lifting and carrying products weighing up to 25 pounds occasionally.
