Job Description

The Ultium Battery Cell Integration Engineer will design, develop and synthesize advanced battery cell technology for GM's Electric Vehicle portfolio. This position requires related experience and/or technical knowledge related to Lithium Ion Battery technology, cell materials and components, such as cathode, anode, separator, electrolyte or testing, development, simulation or systems engineering. The integration engineer will manage projects which include component design interfaces, safety and component integration through the Advanced Cell Process of Engineering (POE), Advanced Technology Work (ATW) and Analysist, Development and Validation (ADV). This engineer will be responsible for Pre-A and A sample cell development, testing, integration, abuse, innovative design and integration solutions. This engineer will have a strong knowledge and practical application of mechanical, thermal, electrical, and structure, including their optimization. The integration engineer will contribute directly to innovation and leading-edge technology, working within a highly technical team who are partnering with emerging companies, organizations, and universities dedicated to Global Electrification and Sustainability. The design engineer will work closely with Cell Technical Specialists, Battery New Products, Systems Engineering, VDDV, Advanced Manufacturing, Development, Purchasing, and Legal. This position directly contributes to GM's vision for Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion. Additional Job Description

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead integration of Ultium Cells into the Battery Module
  • Work with Advanced Module and Pack Designers to design and optimize interface compatibility
  • Create new solutions for robust multi-discipline functions; thermal, mechanical, electrical, abuse; cell mechanical loading, cooling concepts, venting strategies,
  • Develop or contribute to new methods which enable design/integration, test, simulation, optimization, Design Thinking, etc.
  • Reporting and working within a cross-functional team for cell design; enclosure, electrodes, materials, separator, venting, electrolyte, anode, cathode
  • Leverage lessons learned from other programs and ensure compliance to Bill of Design (BOD)
  • Work with Tech Specialists to select appropriate Cell
  • Participate in determining KCDS requirements
  • Lead &/or support Ultium Advanced Technology Work (ATW)
  • Lead &/or support DFMEA, DRBFM, and DRBTR activities
  • Lead &/or support input to ADVP&R
  • Contribute to agreement on Interface Documents
  • Lead Drawing creation with appropriate GD&T and KCDS designation
Basic Required Skills:
  • Specific knowledge of engineering mechanics, heat transfer principles and thermodynamics, sensing, physics
  • Understanding of engineering theory of mechanical and electrical interfaces and their relationship to chemical reactivity; Lithium Ion Battery
  • Use of free body diagrams to identify and communicate appropriate system boundaries
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and ability in relevant engineering disciplines (e.g. Mechanical Interfaces, Boundary Conditions, Test Development, Materials, Manufacturing processes, Lithium ion chemistry)
  • Design For Six Sigma, Statistical Process Control, Reliability, Validation Planning
  • Demonstrate excellent level of analytical ability, communication and interpersonal skills required to build relationships with team members and customers to solve problems and resolve issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and significantly complex projects and assignments with high level of autonomy and accountability for results
  • Demonstrates initiative by reaching beyond work assigned to improve output and/or help others
  • Strong understanding of battery cells, modules, packs or fuel cell stack
  • Proven ability in project management skills and ability to teach others
  • Travel to suppliers and manufacturing facilities as needed
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or equivalent

Preferred Skills:
  • Automotive Propulsion/Transmission/Fuel Cell; Electrification and/or Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)
  • Familiar with Lithium Ion Battery Systems
  • Demonstrated System Integration Problem Solving
  • NX, MatLab, Python, Engineering Analysis Software, Scripting
  • Prior Experience in VDDV, modeling, laboratory, validation, hardware development
  • Statistical Background and Certifications
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes
  • Industrial chemical processing
  • Knowledge of Lithium ion battery cell design and performance, analysis and testing
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • DFSS Black Belt
