GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under general supervision performs preventive maintenance and repairs mechanical equipment and systems throughout the entire hospital complex.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs preventive and/or predictive maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment and systems throughout the hospital including fire extinguishers.

2. Make repairs as necessary to building operations and mechanical systems including replacement of belts, drives, filters, seals, motors and pumps, etc.

3. Repairs all HVAC systems in the hospital (fan units, A/C units, and exhaust fans); including conducting manometer readings. Inspect and diagnose problem equipment.

4. Responds to all emergency situations when and where appropriate and/or necessary and may cover route throughout the complex..

5. Responsible for cleaning all Engineering areas (Bedtower, BTM, Peter Bent Brigham, Thorn Building, BLI, MRB).

6. Performs routine work such as unclogging drains, replacing washers and/or faucets, replacing light bulbs and cords. .

7. Responds to routine work such as hanging pictures, installing cabinets, door locks, hanging bulletin and chalkboards, etc.

8. Performs minor adjustments to beds and stretchers. .

9. Must have a good working knowledge of various tools. May occasionally assist other tradesmen in their duties related to plumbing, electrical, HVAC and carpentry work.

10. Maintain a safe working environment in areas of Engineering Department responsibility.

11. May be required to carry the on-call pagers.

12. May be required to work weekends or rotating shifts. Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned and work with other departments in emergency situations.

Qualifications
1. Must successfully interact and cooperate with other groups with the hospital.

2. Must be able to clearly explain issues to other hospital personnel.

3. High school graduate with over 3 years mechanical or electrical experience and/or a graduate of a technical or vocational school.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1. Good working knowledge and effective use of standard hand tools small power tools and relate mechanical specialty tools.

2. May occasionally (less than 15% of the time) get involved in an dirty or hazardous environment in the performance of his/her duties.

3. Occasionally (less than 15% of the time) must exert effort to lift over 30lbs.

4. Constant tours and walking throughout the facility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works independently as assigned task. Must refer to supervisory staff on matters of exception or clarification of policies and procedures.
