A.T. Still University's College for Healthy Communities (ATSU-CHC) is seeking non-exempt, part time PA faculty for the Central Coast Physician Assistant (CCPA) Program in Santa Maria, California. Academic rank is Assistant Professor. Compensation will be $50/hour (non-exempt). PA faculty will be involved in developing, implementing, and assessing the pre-clinical and clinical phase of the program and also serve as student advisers. These faculty members will work closely with the Preclinical, Clinical Coordinators and the Coordinator of Assessment, Technology and Research and will report to the CCPA Program Chair/Director.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree, Doctorate preferred
  • Graduate from an accredited PA program
  • Current NCCPA Certification
  • Demonstrated successful experience as a PA, preferably in primary health care
  • Previous teaching experience preferred
  • Hold an active PA license
TEACHING

Faculty responsibilities are varied and will differ to some degree based upon the individual phases of the curriculum. Teaching responsibilities include assisting students, one day each week- Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, who are working in small groups with case-based learning and problem-solving. Faculty will be involved in all phases of a robust student and program assessment process- planning, implementing, grading, evaluating, and providing feedback/remediation. As the program is focused on case-based learning, there is no lecture component in the curriculum.

ADVISING
  1. Meet with students to:
  2. Review student performance
  3. Assess student readiness for the next phase of the program
  4. Provide opportunity for the student to verbalize their progress to date
    Provide opportunity for the student to clarify/express concerns/verbalize positive aspects of the program and the student’s role in it
  • Meet with any student who has performed unsatisfactorily either academically or professionally
  • Monitor the student’s progress
  • Bring to the attention of appropriate coordinators, course directors, etc. information on any student considered at risk, needing additional monitoring, or any other form of remediation
  • Maintain complete and up to date records on student and student interactions
  • Verify completeness of permanent file for each advisee within one month of student’s graduation
  • Discuss with Program Chair and Committee on Student Progress any student issues regarding successful progression throughout the Program
  • SERVICE
    • If possible, attend and contribute to faculty, program, and department meetings
    • Participate in the development, revision, and updating of curriculum materials
    • Be a member of the Admissions Committee of the Physician Assistant Program
    • Maintain records and do appropriate follow up on all correspondence pertaining to applicants, students, course assignments and preceptors as applicable/assigned
    • Assume other duties within the Program when needed and feasible.
    • Serve as instructional guide for small group-based learning curriculum.
    • Be aware of syllabi, virtual cases, and course objectives
    • Be prepared to assist with assigned demonstrations/discussions using applicable technology for online and classroom teaching
    • Assess students’ progress in course, communicate with students’ faculty advisors
    • Be prepared to guide identified small group-based case studies and other forms of collaborative interactions with colleagues and students in the PA curriculum.
    • Participate in on-campus clinical skills boot camp (if required):
    • Instruct and supervise students in assigned clinical practice skill labs
    • Evaluate student performance in clinical simulation assessments
    • Critique student assignments and provide prompt feedback
    • Assist with student tutorial/remediation sessions
    • Assist clinical faculty (as needed) with student evaluation in clinical year

    SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY

    PA faculty are expected to fulfill responsibilities as set forth in the A.T. Still University Faculty Handbook. Part time faculty will have the opportunity to participate in research with others in the CCPA Program.

    • Proficiency and/or ability to gain proficiency, in small group instruction
    • General knowledge and proficiency in clinical knowledge, skills, and abilities to function within one’s profession in the primary care PA role
    • Proficiency and/or ability to gain proficiency, in online technology utilized by the Program
    • Knowledge of the role of health care providers in the healthcare system
    • Basic computer skills including the use Google Suite
    • Interest/knowledge of the role of faculty advisers/coaches/mentors in PA education
    • Interest/knowledge of the role of faculty in PA clinical education
    • Strong interest/knowledge of innovative teaching methods as they apply to evidence-based educational processes
