The Chemistry Lab Technician is responsible to the Physical Science Lab Coordinator and the Assistant Dean for Visual and Performing Arts, Education and Sciences for assisting in the preparation of solutions and the maintenance of equipment and instrumentation for chemistry laboratory classes.

Basic Responsibility and Authorities include, but not limited to

Assist Physical Science Lab Coordinator in maintaining equipment and instrumentation used within the chemistry department.

Prepare chemical solutions following established procedures, including standardizations.

Set-up and take down individual laboratory experiments according to prep sheets, storing equipment and materials properly.

Assist Physical Science Lab Coordinator and instructors to help assure safety of students.

Assist chemistry lab instructors during lab time as necessary, trouble-shooting problems with equipment, such as pH meters and computer programs.

Assist the Physical Science Lab Coordinator with chemistry class activities, such as the use of instruments, including the gas chromatograph, the infrared spectrophotometer, and the ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometer, and equipment, including pH meters, data collection sensors and software.

Inventory chemicals and supplies annually, updating Access database as required, alerting the Physical Science Lab Coordinator when chemicals and supplies are running low.

Assist the Physical Science Lab Coordinator in ordering and receiving chemicals and supplies.

Follow all safety protocols as outlined in the Chemical Hygiene Plan, including proper disposal of chemical waste, wearing personal protective equipment, and maintaining a clean workroom area.

Research the Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals and solutions, maintaining the most current in binders.

Complete mandatory training for lab safety and college compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of one year of college chemistry with laboratory required; two years or AS preferred.

Able to work independently and follow directions, written and oral.

Available to work flexible schedule that may include both day and evening hours.

Personal transportation available to travel between campuses as needed.

Excellent organizational skills.

Excellent communication skills, written and oral.

Good computer skills, including Windows and Microsoft Office.

Ability to lift 35 pounds independently.
