Job Overview

This position researches, develops and creates the integrated classroom audio-video and tele-communication system designs for Classroom Educational Technology Services (CETS). It provides a standard design of technology in all Main Campus classrooms enabling users a simple, reliable system to enhance their teaching and learning. The position additionally, creates and develops instructional information to enable the CETS Classroom Managers (CM) success in their daily responsibilities. It conducts individual training sessions and group workshops ensuring the CMs technical skill levels are adequate to fulfill their duties in the classroom. The instructional information includes, but is not limited to, effective and efficient first-fault isolation techniques, diagrams illustrating I/O signal flow and fundamental classroom audio-visual concepts. The Classroom Design and Instructional Engineer (CDIE), provides supplemental support to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and maintain classroom audio-video and tele-communication systems, computer equipment and peripherals used in the main campus classrooms, seminar rooms, interactive computer classrooms, auditoria, and conference rooms. The CDIE assists the Associate Director for Engineering in designing and implementing a strategy plan for technology hardware EOL (End Of Life) cycle. Using intermediate planning skills and technical knowledge, the position performs complex, relatively varied tasks to provide technical support for educational technology. The incumbent, in support of the CMs, must make repairs and change out equipment during class sessions with minimal class lesson disruption and system down-time, which is a critical priority. The position has the responsibility to make a value added contribution in quickly and effectively resolving problems. The position ensures that the faculty, students and staff have the hardware necessary to demonstrate for classroom presentations. The CDIE assists the Associate Director for Engineering in preparing the Engineering Operations budget, supervising outsourced contractors and vendors, parts and component orders, lamp assembly orders and purchasing of specific system equipment. The incumbent is in charge of keeping adequate inventory of the above mentioned items.

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Associate Director for Engineering, along with 1 FTE, Network Administrator/Classroom Computer Coordinator (NA/CCC), 1-2 student assistants. The Associate Director for Engineering reports to the Executive Director along with 3 FTE staff members, and indirectly 12.5 FTE staff and 6 FTE student assistants. Under moderate supervision the position is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing problems, repairing and maintaining all of the audio-visual, computer equipment and peripherals which are used in classrooms, seminar classrooms, interactive computer classrooms, auditoria, and conference rooms. The position trains and supports the CMs in developing the technical skill levels needed to fulfill their responsibility to supply educational technology in the GPCs. Along with the Associate Director for Engineering (ADE), the position designs and upgrades the installed technology in the Main Campus GPCs. The position works closely with the CMs, the Lead System Manager, and the NA/CCC to ensure that all technology used by faculty, students and staff, in the teaching environment is functioning properly. The incumbent communicates regularly with the Executive Director and other University departments.

This Position:

  • Fosters a direct and close relationship with the Executive Director by maintaining open and transparent communication to coordinate and execute successful resolution of required action items in classroom spaces.
  • Coordinates with and supervises AV contractors during AV installation projects on Main Campus to evaluate work progress and provide quality control verification.
  • Consults with the CETS staff and other service providers to ensure that faculty, students and staff have access to the resources needed to enhance teaching, learning and research. This involves large numbers of contacts and/or in-depth questions posed yearly by patrons and staff.
  • Works closely with the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS), to assist faculty integrating new technology and resources into their teaching, learning and research techniques.
  • Works closely with the vendors to ensure the timely delivery of lamp assemblies, parts and components for the repair and maintenance of the built-in equipment in 160 teaching spaces and for portable equipment.
  • Works with the CETS Executive Director to coordinate vendor demonstrations of new technology.
  • Assists CETS Executive Director and Assistant Directors in planning for classroom renovations, and the selection of equipment and technology to be added to existing teaching spaces.
  • Works closely with other service providers to ensure a seamless teaching experience (Gelardin New Media Center, MSB Tech Center, Language Learning Technology Center and on occasion UIS).
  • Works closely with vendors by providing bid specs and reviewing their bid submissions.
  • Serves on departmental and University committees.


This position plays an important role in fulfilling the primary goal of the University, the teaching and learning of its students by:
  • Researching, developing and designing classroom AV systems to provide for the faculty's required and recommended technology for their pedagogy.
  • Ensuring that the faculty, student and staff using technology in classrooms, seminar rooms, interactive computer classrooms, auditoria and conference rooms have technology that is in proper working order.
  • Servicing and maintaining built-in technology and portable equipment peripherals to ensure that the technology is in constant use in the classroom environment.
  • Training CETS staff and the student assistants in the operation of new equipment and peripherals to ensure the users' timely access to the technology for presentation and support.
  • Overseeing the technical training and development of the CMs.
  • Procuring parts, lamp assemblies and components for the timely repair and maintenance of presentation equipment daily affecting thousands of students and faculty members.
  • Designing, integrating and installing technology enhancements in the classroom.
  • Assisting the CETS Executive Director and ADE with selection of new technology for renovations and upgrades to classrooms, seminar rooms, interactive computer classrooms, auditoria and conference rooms to best serve the University community.

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field with emphasis on computer/digital technology

Associates Degree in Electronics Technology Theory and Repair

Familiarity with the role of technology services on college campus to ensure users technology and presentation needs.

Three years' experience servicing audio-visual equipment, microprocessor embedded equipment and computers.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write clearly and concisely; strong interpersonal skills; attention to details; and ability to work under pressure in a complex, changing environment.

Technical Qualifications:

Troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing desktop and laptop hardware and control processors and control panels for AV sub-systems and multimedia controls.

In-depth diagnostic and maintenance actions on educational technology equipment

Expertise with Windows Operating Systems, database management software, spreadsheet software, word processing and presentation software.

Ability to communicate and train staff in the use and repair of installed technology.

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field with emphasis on computer/digital technology

Experience with systems design, repair and maintenance, working knowledge of microprocessor embedded equipment; PC and laptop computers and peripherals; digital and analog electronics, digital and analog audio and video equipment.

Ability to design new systems and modify existing equipment and/or systems. Proficiency with computer-aided design and drafting software applications.

Powder charge actuated tools license and certification required.
