The purpose of this position is to support a clinical prospective observational cohort study of patients with critical illness (sepsis) admitted to the intensive care unit, and critical care clinical trials. The candidate will be an essential member of a team investigating clinical and molecular risk factors for sepsis, sepsis-related organ failure including respiratory failure, kidney failure, and cognitive impairment, and attempting to identify specific patterns of response that might be candidates for future targeted therapy. In addition, the individual will assist with active clinical trials testing new treatments for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, and acute kidney injury.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and the investigative team and following training, the candidate will perform duties related to human clinical and translational research. Specifically, the candidate will interpret and abstract data from the electronic medical record and record specific elements into electronic databases; manage, clean and display data; interact directly with critically ill patients and their families, obtain informed consent and administer research questionnaires; and process human biospecimens, including blood samples. The candidate should have some prior coursework or experience in biology or a related field. Other necessary skills include the ability to communicate effectively, work as a team member, display organizational efficiency and adapt to new processes as necessary.
Job Responsibilities
Process biospecimens for plasma, serum, or cell pellet/cells
Clinical data extraction, entry, and cleaning
Administer mental status assessments to patients and consent patients to study
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
High School Diploma and 1-2 years of experience in a relevant field (e.g., life sciences or a related discipline) or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
