CO Physician Assistant
The Department of Surgery seeks a Physician Assistant (PA) to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team. The PA is responsible for providing comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care to patients being evaluated for and undergoing Vascular Surgery Care.

The PA provides patient education as well as routine history and physical assessments and evaluation of lab tests. This individual will assist with inpatient (on the Surgical Floor), outpatient care (in the Vascular Surgery Clinic) and work with the surgery medical team; order and provide appropriate treatments and medications; strive for quality patient care and safety initiatives; and complete all necessary documentation and billing information as appropriate and meet compliance guidelines. The PA is responsible for providing comprehensive and age appropriate care to both well and/or ill patients.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Inpatient: 50%

  • Provides comprehensive, age appropriate and episodic care to patients as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Obtains patient history; participates in daily patient care including specialized wound care; develops treatment plan for discharge and prepares the patient discharge summary.
  • Provides information to staff regarding patient's care plan and condition.
  • Responds and handles telephone calls related to Vascular patients. Completes patient requested documents (FMLA).
  • Consistently develops effective treatment plans for assigned patients according to established protocols and procedures.

  • Regularly confers and consults with surgeons, residents and/or other pertinent professionals before implementing treatment plan.

  • Consistently structures all patient care plans to meet educational, physical and social needs appropriate to the patient's age.

  • Consistently provides relevant patient care information to the appropriate staff member according to clinical guidelines.

  • Provides education to patient and family members regarding diagnosis, complications, treatment and medications in order to provide them with continuous information.


Outpatient: 50%
  • Provides comprehensive, age appropriate and episodic care to patients as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Cares for outpatient independently as well as assisting the Vascular Surgeons in clinic.
  • Provides wound care and specialized dressings for patients.
  • Arranges follow-up care and testing for vascular patients.
  • Consistently develops effective treatment plans for assigned patients according to established protocols and procedures.
  • Consistently structures all patient care plans to meet educational, physical and social needs appropriate to the patient's age.
  • Consistently provides relevant patient care information to the appropriate staff member according to clinical guidelines.
  • Provides education to patient and family members regarding diagnosis, complications, treatment and medications in order to provide them with continuous information.


Refers:
  • Works in collaboration with the physician and realizes and is able to detect those deviations from normalcy or from established protocols which require consultation and/or referral to appropriate specialty areas including physicians, nutrition, psycho-social, and other resources.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body.
  • Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as a PA in State of Maryland.
  • Experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor's Degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
  • Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH and Bayview Medical Center credentialing process is required prior to start date.


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
