Commercial Construction Site Engineer

Job Description:

A Site Engineer (SE) represents the basic entry level position in the HITT Futures Leadership program. The position will contain either a workforce and an education component, intended to progress concurrently, or a three-year minimum workforce component if not pursing a degree.

Education Component: 16 hours/week (optional)

The SE position allows participants to attend an institution of higher education with the intent of obtaining a degree in an industry-related field of study such as a two-year associate degree in construction management, engineering, business, or architecture. It is anticipated that the candidate will spend approximately 16 hours per week on the education component of the program with this apportioned to class and study time as the candidate deems appropriate. This program is designed with flexibility to allow candidates ample time to balance a normal course load with the work requirements of the construction team on site. The supervising HITT Site Operations team member will work with each SE to ensure that work schedules support the class and study requirements. Any HITT-required training or classes will be achieved as part of the workforce component.

Workforce Component: 24 hours/week or 40 hours/week

SE participants enrolled in an institution of higher education will have to additionally work concurrently on the job site for 24 hours a week. If an SE is not pursuing a degree of higher education, they will be required to work a full 40-hour work week on the jobsite for a minimum of three years. An SE is assigned to a Senior HITT Site Operations team member to learn basic construction skills related to general construction. The learning process is meant to be a ground-up experience in which the position begins with manual skill development and progresses over time towards basic supervisory abilities. The SEs may be asked to perform manual or trade tasks to better understand or enhance their understanding and knowledge of basic construction activities. Entry level training will focus on construction site operations at the basic trade levels with an emphasis on how each trade interacts with the process of general contracting. The position will advance to a more holistic understanding of site safety, project planning, site organization, and subcontractor supervision to promote and succeed as an assistant superintendent as part of HITT's Site Operations team. During the team members' time as SEs, they will be expected to learn or have basic exposure to the following developmental goals and responsibilities related to general construction:

General Project Skills:

  • Assist in set up and maintenance of a clean and orderly a jobsite office.
  • Install and maintain proper site signage and postings as directed.
  • Install and maintain proper site protection as directed.
  • Understand and help maintain site security.
  • Understand HITT's corporate safety program and how it applies to work being conducted on the jobsite.
  • Interface and coordinate with projects superintendents daily.
  • Carry out tasks assigned by project superintendents as directed.
  • Gain basic understanding of site logistics and set up.
  • Develop basic understanding of schedule logic.
  • Understand daily reporting and participate when directed.
  • Coordinate site deliveries and traffic control.
  • Inventory tools, equipment and materials as directed.

Labor and Trade Skills:
  • Interface and coordinate with building trades as directed by project superintendent.
  • Develop basic understanding and scopes for individual building trades.
  • Develop a basic knowledge of trade sequencing.
  • Attend foremen meetings.
  • Assist in supervised layout.
  • Assist in supervised field measuring.
  • Attend and observe preparatory meetings with subcontractors when directed.
  • Observe and enforce PPE and safety requirements with tradesmen.

Advancement

Upon completing three years in the workforce component or achievement of the associate degree and completion of a minimum 24 months in the workforce component, the SE will be eligible for promotion to Assistant Superintendent and will graduate from the HITT Futures program.
