Communications Coordinator
The Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute (UHI) works across the university to advance health and health equity in Baltimore via a wide range of programs, events, and educational and funding opportunities designed to facilitate collaboration, mobilize resources, and advance dialogue and community representation. The UHI is seeking an energetic and creative Communications Coordinator to join its communications team that is passionate about equity, social justice, and community engagement. Under the direction of the Communications Associate, this role will assist in executing innovative digital and print communication strategies to help carry out the mission and spread the message of the UHI to a broad audience of stakeholders interested and involved in supporting and developing healthy communities.

This individual will be expected to contribute to UHI in gaining greater visibility. In addition, should be able to embed Qualtrics or any other survey platform into Websites using HTML and JavaScript code to track user engagement. The Communications Coordinator should have advanced experience with social media platforms in a professional setting and web design/content management, be a strong writer and editor, up to date on latest content technology and implement current trends in a professional setting. Experience in community-based work, particularly in Baltimore City is a plus.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Social media management and marketing, including but not limited to building and maintaining social media presence.
  • Event and program marketing, including but not limited to development of toolkits, and creation of flyers.
  • Website management, including but not limited to creating and writing blogs, and ensuring the webpage(s) are updated with the most recent content.
  • Reporting on UHI community events and able to write high quality announcements, human interest stories, and press releases.
  • Dissemination of print and digital material.
  • Monthly e-newsletter and e-blasts.
  • Organize digital assets and assists in the maintenance of communications databases.
  • Additional communication and marketing duties as assigned.
  • Skilled photographer/videographer a plus.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Must have, or in the process of, pursuing a 4-year degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or marketing.
  • Experience can be substituted.
  • Experience with, or interest in, digital and print marketing as well digital and social content preparation.
  • Working knowledge of Mac/PC operations and MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.); Squarespace, SiteExecutive, Canva and Qualtrics; e-mail platforms such as Mailchimp; social media platforms such as Twitter, Meta/Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and schedulers such as Hootsuite is required, as well as experience with Google Analytics.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience or familiar with graphic design software and platforms Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (Bridge, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), website management Drupal and/or SiteExecutive, and surveying platform Qualtrics is desired.

Starting Salary Range: $17.59 - $24.80/hr (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
