We are seeking a cooperative (co-op) education students, in the Traverso Lab at Brigham and Women's Hospital with a backgrounds in synthetic organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or related. Our research group consists of an interdisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, biologists, pharmaceutical scientists, and physicians focused on developing clinically translatable biomedical devices and drug delivery systems.

The student will contribute towards developing triggerable, self-destructive materials used to engineer oral, implantable and transdermal systems for long-term delivery medicinal therapeutics. Primary responsibilities include synthesizing organic compounds and chemical intermediates, purification of compounds using flash chromatography, quantitative chemical analysis, device fabrication, and assisting with in vivo small and large animals.

Qualifications
The candidate should be a student enrolled in a B.S./M.S. program or equivalent in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, biochemistry or a related field. An ideal candidate will have demonstrated research background in synthetic organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, or materials chemistry. In addition, the ideal candidate must demonstrate at least three of the following:

  • Demonstrated experience with chemical synthesis.
  • Conducted, a minimum, 1 semester of chemistry-related research in a professional laboratory (outside of undergraduate and graduate curricula).
  • Completed two semesters of Organic chemistry (I and II) with lab.
  • Experience with quantitative analytical techniques (HPLC/LCMS, NMR, GPC).
  • Familiar with SciFinder/Reaxys/ResearchGate/Google Scholar to help design efficient synthetic routes.
  • Familiar with ChemDraw software for designing schemes and structures.

Applicant will be trained to perform techniques in experiments, including modern synthetic organic chemistry and analytical chemistry. After sufficient training, the intern is expected to work independently with minimal supervision;

Candidate must have self-motivation and willingness to learn new tools and techniques; strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; comfort summarizing and reporting results to interdisciplinary researchers; commitment to exceeding standards and producing accurate, high quality work; meticulous attention to detail; practiced documentation skills; and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
