Position Summary

Description: Make or form sand cores or molds used in the production of metal castings in the foundry. Performs all core making activities in all core operations and processes. Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities

  • Tasks:
    • Inspect and review core boxes before using.
    • Sift and pack sand into mold sections, core boxes, and pattern contours, using hand tools.
    • Clean and smooth molds, cores, and core boxes, and repair surface imperfections.
    • Form and assemble slab cores around patterns and position wire in mold sections to reinforce molds, using hand tools and glue.
    • Move and position work pieces, such as mold sections, patterns, and bottom boards, using cranes, or signal others to move workpieces.
    • Access computer to review work instructions.
    • May be required to operate industrial trucks (fork trucks, lift trucks, etc.)
    • May train new employees.
    • Cut wire using hand or hydraulic cutting tools.
    • Scan in production records for each day.
    • Sprinkle or spray parting agents onto patterns and mold sections to facilitate removal of patterns from molds. Clean up work area and clean out mixers.
    • Follow relevant work instructions and/or SOP.
    • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

    Physical Abilities:
    • Manual Dexterity- The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
    • Finger Dexterity- The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
    • Trunk Strength- The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.
    • Arm-Hand Steadiness- The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
    • Multilimb Coordination- The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
    • Reaction Time- The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture), or to an error, when it appears.
    • Ability to perceive and interpret information through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch at a level considered normal for a healthy adult. Must exhibit good balance.
    • Maximum lifting requirement is 50 lbs.; any material of greater weight must be moved using machinery or team lifts.
    • Requires standing, bending, twisting, for long periods at a time.
Education Required:
  • Equivalent to high school education plus some shop training.
Experience Required:
  • 3+ months of performing physical labor foundry experience preferred.
