Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Job Summary:

Responsible for administering, planning, and coordinating all work production in the Molecular Department while assisting with implementing laboratory policies, procedures, manuals, continuing education programs and safety initiatives to improve operating efficiency and effectiveness of medical services.

Essential Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the daily operations of the molecular department and personnel to ensure adherence to quality standards, deadlines, and established procedures.
  • Evaluates effectiveness and improve the quality of services provided.
  • Delegates authority, prioritizes work activities, resolves problems, prepares schedules, and sets deadlines to ensure timely completion of work.
  • Develops and implements laboratory policies, procedures, manuals, continuing education programs and safety initiatives to improve operating efficiency and effectiveness of medical services.
  • Exercises independent judgment in dealing with procedural and technical problems.
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, disciplining and evaluating all molecular personnel.
  • Controls staffing costs and growth by evaluating staffing ratios, competencies and requirements.
  • Conducts molecular analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and other preserved body fluids, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components and releases results to referring client.
  • Analyzes samples to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms and releases results to referring client.
  • Analyzes test results, enters results into the information system for storage, and releases results to the referring client.
  • Evaluates unusual or abnormal test results as well as resolves instrumentation problems to ensure continuous, quality operations.
  • Establishes and monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
  • Operates, calibrates, and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
  • Evaluates test results, develops and modifies procedures, and establishes and monitors programs to ensure the accuracy of tests.
  • Trains and/or supervises clinical laboratory staff and other technical personnel.
  • Coordinates staffing levels with projected volume to accomplish the workload while ensuring a consistently high level of quality.
  • Establishes departmental goals and objectives that reflect and support the overall company mission.
  • Heads special projects as requested by Pathologists or Administration.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality.
  • Participate in all levels of product development including proposing new products, performing market analyses, designing and performing experiments, and collaborating with operations and quality control teams during product launches.
  • Maintains a current level of knowledge in the area of molecular biology.
  • Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations (CAP, CLIA, OSHA, etc) as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.
  • Successful completion of courses in Genetics, Biology, Physiology and Chemistry.
  • State licensure, if applicable.
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP): MB or MT.

Experience:

  • Minimum of six (6) years' experience in clinical lab testing, molecular testing of immunohistochemistry and/or two (2) years' experience as a Molecular Supervisor.
  • Prior preferred experience in electrophoresis, hybridization, incubation, sequencing, DNA/RNA extraction, purification, amplification, PCR, NAAT, etc.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color discrimination test.
  • Successful completion of annual continuing education units per state licensure and/or ASCP guidelines.
  • Knowledge of basic clinical laboratory equipment including analyzers and personal protective equipment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control.
  • Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications.
  • Skill in operating a variety of laboratory support instrumentation.
  • Ability to listen, read, understands, and follows oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.

Environmental Working Conditions:

  • Laboratory Setting; exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, blood borne pathogens, chemical hazards, and sharp instruments.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
