Summary:
Directs, establishes, organizes and plans the overall operation of the laboratory and goals for the hospital s laboratory services. Works closely with the laboratory medical director, hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure the highest standards of quality and service are maintained.
Detailed responsibilities:
• Provides day to day technical direction and oversight for comprehensive laboratory services under the guidance of the Laboratory Medical Director.
• Work with hospital administration on planning, organizing and directing laboratory operations.
• Directs compliance activities for the laboratory maintaining conformity to the accreditation standards of Joint Commission and/or CAP and with the regulations of CLIA'88, OSHA, and HIPAA.
• Directs quality assurance activities and ensures that all Quality Assurance activities within the department conform to accrediting agency and CLIA'88 requirements; working with each section manager to ensure sectional QA plans are complete within established guidelines.
• Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
• Supervises assigned staff and provides assistance to others in supervising their staff. Ensures that productivity measures accurately reflect the departmental workload. Ensures adequate and appropriate staffing throughout the department. Ensures that sections receive appropriate in-service and orientation training.
• Direct and participate in the human resource management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation/training, disciplinary action, competency assessment, performance appraisal processes and continuing education initiatives.
• Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment and monitoring the performance against budget for assigned cost center(s). Coordinates and directs internal/external audits.

• And graduate of an accredited Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist program.

Complexity of Work: Advanced knowledge of laboratory procedures, instrumentation and laboratory services. Ability to effectively relate and communicate, orally and in writing, with internal and external customers. Advanced knowledge of laboratory information systems. Requires critical thinking skills, effective communication skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Required Work Experience: Five (5) years of managerial experience.
