Job Description
Responsible for the overall leadership and management of the department to include provision of accommodations, programs, services, educational outreach, constituency support and resource on access issues for the College community. Responsible for articulation of current College policy on disability access, relevant ADA/504 guidelines, evaluation of current programs and services.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Provides direction for program development, implementation and evaluation as it relates to integration and support of persons with disability.
  • Articulates and interprets policy as it relates to the provision of reasonable accommodation for persons with disability.
  • Develops policies and procedures for accessibility that meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, the department and the campus community.
  • Evaluates individual requests for accommodation ensuring compliance with ADA/504 regulations and meeting the standard of reasonable accommodation.
  • Maintains appropriate and complete documentation and records.
  • Serves as a resource to the College community on issues of access, service delivery, program development and accommodation.
  • Meets with a caseload of students who disclose a disability as well as with others interested in exploring resources for temporary and possible health needs to provide information and advisement regarding accessibility services and related resources both within and outside the college.
  • Maintain contact with college constituencies (faculty, administrators, staff, students), professional organizations, and disability agencies in order to take advantage of available resources for continued development of student disability awareness and services on campus.
  • Provide expertise and serve as a resource and consultant to event managers, Human Resources and other College stakeholders as they work with faculty, staff, students and guests who need accommodative services.
  • Assess students, departmental and campus needs as related to accessibility and disability and make recommendations for necessary changes to adapt to needs of population.
  • Provide budget management and financial oversight of the department.
  • Supervises and trains Disability Services staff to ensure that constituent needs are being addressed objectively and within the guidelines of the College and laws related to disability such as the ADA and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and its amendments.
  • Provide leadership in the development of a testing center for academic accommodations.
  • Chair the housing accommodations committee and help determine appropriate accommodations for residential students.
  • Chair the ADA/504 campus committee to review campus accessibility needs and make recommendations.
  • Consult with General Counsel on sensitive cases to limit legal liability and litigation.
  • Provide periodic training to campus community on best practices for working with students with disabilities.
  • Participate and/or present at orientation sessions.
  • Maintain departmental website and if applicable, social media platforms.
  • Serve on college committees as directed by supervisor.

Education Required
  • Master's degree in related field such as rehabilitation counseling, special education, disability studies, higher education, counseling, psychology.
Experience Required
  • Demonstrated professional and progressive experience working with college-age individuals in a disability services setting.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a higher education leadership role that includes disability services and accommodations with responsibilities that include budget management, program assessment, staff supervision and training.
  • Creating programming and services that promote accessibility and equal access for individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience identifying and resolving complex problems or issues that require detailed investigation, analysis, and interpretation.
Skills and Abilities Required
  • Thorough knowledge of ADA, The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other federal and state guidelines relating to disability, accommodations and access issues for Higher Ed Institutions
  • Solid organizational and administrative skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in a diverse environment at all levels, with tact and diplomacy in order to achieve program and campus goals
  • Skills to analyze interpret and incorporate into the context of daily work activities and decision-making the intent of the laws, policies, and practices regarding students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of case law, court rulings, current practices and trends/developments in the field of disabled student services in postsecondary education
  • Demonstrated experience including leadership, accountability, communication, decision-making, problem solving and conflict management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to build and sustain key relationships with governing agencies, students with disabilities, and all levels of the college community
  • Excellent computer skills include being able to work with all Microsoft Office products, Internet resources including social media and adaptive computing. Familiarity with AIM case management software is preferred.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with professionalism.
  • Keep current on best practices in the field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of universal design concepts especially those related to academics, event planning, and physical access.
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend events if necessary.
