Job Summary:

The Director of the Office of Career Services is a highly-visible position within the Dedman School of Law's Office of Career Services. The Director is responsible for developing job opportunities for students and recent graduates, marketing SMU Law students and graduates to legal employers, providing career counseling to students and recent graduates, designing and implementing educational opportunities related to jobs with the judiciary, tracking and reporting employment statistics, representing the Office of Career Services to external groups, including industry organizations, and assisting with the daily management of office functions, among other duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitate job opportunities for law students and recent graduates to generate strong employment outcomes; market students and graduates to a wide variety of legal employers (law firms, the judiciary, government agencies, public interest organizations & corporations).
  • Serve as liaison to the judiciary. Develop employment opportunities with federal and state courts. Maintain strong relationships with federal and state judges. Coordinate and facilitate judicial internship and externship programs, including the Federal Judicial Externship Program.
  • Design & implement innovative educational programming for law students to inform them of career opportunities with the judiciary and educate them on how to secure those positions. Create, plan, and implement programs securing speakers, including judges and alumni.
  • Counsel students seeking post-graduate judicial clerkships and facilitate the post-graduate judicial clerkship application process, including resume and cover letter review, interview preparation, and advice on job search techniques and leads/contacts for potential jobs.
  • Handle daily administrative functions, including posting of judicial employment opportunities to Simplicity and other duties that may be assigned.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Juris Doctor degree and five (5) years of legal experience is required for this role. The candidate must be a licensed member of the State Bar of Texas and in good standing.

Candidate with familiarity with post-graduate federal judicial clerkship processes experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ideal candidate must demonstrate willingness and desire to work with and counsel law students to help them achieve their career goals. Candidate must possess the ability to work independently and take initiative, as well as be a team player who works well on group projects. Candidate must hold strong presentation skills with the ability to present clear and accurate information to small and large groups are essential. Excellent communication skills are required with the ability to communicate effectively with students and judges.

Candidate must possess a working knowledge in Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Attention to detail is a must.
