Summary:

The Director of Commercial Operations within the Chief Commercial Office is a critically important role, enabling the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) to work most effectively with internal and external stakeholders and realize the commercial organizations' high impact objectives to EMD Serono's patients, shareholders, and Board of Directors. The role is a combination of strategy and operational execution that requires a high degree of empowerment and agility, as well as a willingness to play an active, behind-the-scenes role. As the CCOs trusted counsel, the role requires a highly resourceful individual with strong in-direct leadership, self-motivation, and strong program leadership skills. Working as a right hand to the CCO, you will take a lead role in driving high impact commercial projects within the business, giving you deep insight and access to the organizational strategy and operational execution. You will have the opportunity to focus on formulating and/or implementing strategies and operational planning and execution to realize current and potential future revenue streams and maximize value.

Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

  • 8+ years of US commercial biopharmaceutical experience

Direct Reports

The Director of Commercial Operations will have the Project Manager, Commercial Operations reporting in directly. The Project Manager will drive the USOC meeting content, facilitation and follow through on actions, inclusive of KPIs and support as may be needed on Commercial projects.

Responsibilities:

US Operating Committee (US OC)
  • Identify and operationalize charter for US OC, including working with cross functional leaders to create a streamlined approach to share and discuss financial performance and key business drivers
  • Lead, design, execution, and coordination of US OC leadership team meetings
  • Shape content and support teams in preparation for US OC meetings
  • Serve as the bridge for smooth communication between the CCO and leaders across the organization
  • Responsible for the creation/modification of companywide US commercial policy
  • Build relationships with cross functional leaders to foster collaboration across the company

Strategic Initiatives
  • Oversee execution of strategic and operational efforts to achieve organizational mission
  • Ensure all projects are appropriately prioritized and key goals are met on time
  • Support CCO in preparing reports, briefings, and presentations on strategic issues in advance of key upcoming meetings
  • Identify risks and opportunities that could impact the successful execution of strategic and/or business objectives; Elevate risks and issues and frame/position ideas to resolve the issues, mitigate the risks
  • Develop and manage a process for measuring and reporting progress on high-priority initiatives and programs
Program Leadership & Operations
  • Lead and / or manage special innovative projects and high-profile initiatives, as appropriate
  • Oversee vendor relationships; provide direction to ensure defined objectives are met
  • Provide decision support for opportunities through research, analysis of data/information, and providing clear presentations of your takeaways and recommendations
  • Lead the development and execution of an annual brand plan that fully supports the company's strategic objectives, tactics, and annual P&L budget
  • Operate as a trusted advisor to leadership, utilizing strategy and operational insights, executive level problem solving, and communication and leadership skills to drive organizational action
  • Build strong internal and external partnerships to develop innovative and agile approaches to managing business operations
  • Implement strategies and/or projects to drive end-to-end value creation
Continuous Improvement
  • Proactively design, establish, and manage processes that will enable the team (or organization) to operate effectively to achieve corporate and departmental objectives
  • Identify and resolve business operational issues, and develop, improve, and operationalize processes and systems resulting in improved operational accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness
Communications
  • Compose and manage correspondence dealing with issues or subject matter that is highly sensitive and confidential
  • Serve as primary liaison for internal and external communications
  • Support the CCO in defining and developing high-impact executive communications, including presentations for HEC, Town Hall meetings and other internal and external audiences
Organizational & Leadership Culture
  • Work with CCO to identify training opportunities / other interventions to drive culture change throughout organization; liaise with vendors to execute training as needed Partner with HR and other commercial areas to build, execute and monitor engagement tactics to optimize the culture of the organization
  • Support the CCO to drive the THRIVE leadership behaviors and principles of Simplicity, Accountability and Execution and embed across the broader organization
  • Identify training needs/ a gap analysis within the organization and propose and implement initiatives to address those gaps
