What you will be doing:

The Director of Research & Insights creates competitive advantage for HoT Beauty business unit by delivering market segment analysis, industry insights, category trend information and fact-based customer and consumer understanding coupled with performance data and proof points to fuel a growth agenda.

This role is responsible for leading and managing industry and market segment research, customer & consumer insights and category and competitive monitoring and analysis to facilitate strategic and tactical decision-making in the Beauty business unit. Additionally, this Director will create and implement studies and practices to support deeper understanding of buying behaviors and product use. This leader is a key member of the Marketing team who anticipates the needs of the division and influences the thinking of the business units with rich views into the consumer, their problem, desires, unmet needs and unrecognized needs, trends influencing the beauty category, customer business and the overall competitive landscape.

They will work closely with the business unit leadership, sales, product and marketing team members and other cross functional teams to identify data and analytics needs to support business development efforts. This role will require deep knowledge on how to turn data into concrete insights and will need to bring strategic agility, outstanding analysis, and strong influencing and leadership skills. All of this will support the mission to drive growth, develop world class brands and hire and retain a highly functioning research and insights team.

  • Apply market data, consumer research and insights, and competitive intelligence to find opportunities and needs in the market to support the expansion, customization, and optimization of existing products, the introduction of new products, and consumer segmentation initiatives.
  • Leverage deep understanding of key brand health measures, as well as a keen understanding of a constantly evolving driven, technological, retail and customer environment to partner with brand leads to champion refinement of the brand's strategic positioning and architecture
  • Dissect market and retailer data to provide insights including, but not limited to, Space to Sales, SKU rationalization, and key competitor assessments to drive brand market share.
  • Build and maintain true understanding of market trends and omni-channel category insights by demonstrating Category Development toolkit such as, but not limited to: Nielsen, NPD, Profitero, Spectra, Kantar, Mintel, Euromonitor and specific research.
  • Lead the identification of category insights and development of selling stories to support the sell in of brands, NPD, etc.
  • Understand business issues and questions to address. Develop comprehensive research brief, that includes the overall business objectives, learning areas, and action standards.
  • Determine and recommend research methodology to address business questions.
  • Conduct research, primary and secondary, to provide concrete insights in a timely manner.
  • Manage vendors from research design (incl sample, questionnaire, discussion guide), field work, analysis, reporting and presentation delivery; ensuring data accuracy.
  • Analyze and interpret data in Excel. Build insightful PowerPoint charts and slides.
  • Deliver learning, in a story-like presentation that addresses all research objectives and includes useful recommendations to key partners.
  • Support Line Reviews demonstrating shopper analytics, POS performance metrics, planogram assessments, and internal trend information.
  • Share findings/recommendations with key team members internally and externally.
  • Identify deep category shopper insights to support the optimization of the marketing mix (placement distribution and assortment) and uncover growth opportunities.
  • Conduct workshops as needed to help partners use insight dashboards to develop action plan.
  • Promote, facilitate and enable ongoing team learning and education.
  • Review and improve, where vital, all insights processes, measurements, information systems, etc., that enable the overall function to operate efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide ongoing mentoring and honest feedback to direct reports and other team members as needed.


Skills needed to be successful in this role:
  • Analytical and critical thinking attitude with an eye towards opportunity assessments and action planning
  • Demonstrate the ability to impact and influence at multiple levels and across the company (influencing skills)


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 8+ years' experience in roles of responsibility with market research
  • 3 + years of work experience as a manager/analyst
  • Expertise developing and programming primary research questionnaires that deliver objectively breakthrough insights
  • Rich experience using overnight online research tools such as surveymonkey and focusvision decipher
  • Experience with industry leading statistical and reporting tools and applications as well as experience with and knowledge of insights, analytics and data platforms like NPD, Nielsen, Profitero, or similar
  • Brand management, d2c and b2b, product and service development, customer experience, satisfaction and market outlook experience or partnering expertise to scope appropriate research for impact and action ability
  • Experience and knowledge of customer journey in mass and prestige retail environment and ecommerce
  • Manage, mentor and develop team
  • Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
