Director, Student Activities - (220000B9) Job Summary Towson University (TU) is one of the nation's top 100 public universities. The Director of the Office of Student Activities serves in a pivotal role in helping to achieve the University's strategic goals to enhance the student experience and success at Towson University. The Director strives to promote student engagement beyond the classroom. The Director will be critical to developing students, enhancing learning, building school spirit as well as increasing community and connectivity among students. Areas of responsibility include campus programming, student organizations, Student Government Association (SGA), Homecoming, LeaderShape and leadership development, and TigerFest. The Director will manage a budget of over $2 million and will be responsible for supervising/overseeing full-time staff, graduate assistants, and a host of student employees. The Director will also initiate collaborations across departments and other units of the University in an attempt to build communication, community and sharing of resources.

Responsibilities and Duties Understand the University's mission and Division's goals and develops department-specific goals and objectives to reflect it. Develop a shared vision and oversee programmatic areas of campus programming, leadership development (Clifton Strengths, Leadership workshops and Comprehensive Learner Record (CLR)) and student organization operations. Collaborate with other units and departments to help develop and enhance the programmatic and leadership development impact on campus. Hire, train and supervise professional staff. Serve as a representative of Student Activities on the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) and assist with programs and initiatives of other departments. Actively participate in continued professional development and provide oversight to department professional development activities. Prepare, allocate and effectively manage departmental budget (including Student Government accounts) exceeding over $2 million. Work to improve the quality of the student experience through student involvement and co-curricular learning as well as be an advocate for social justice. Serve as primary advisor to SGA and directly advise, train and support its executive officers. Review, evaluate, and update student organization policies, procedures, and processes.

Provide oversight to campus-wide signature events such as late night and weekend programming, Tigerfest, SGA Tiger Pride Day, LaborStay Weekend, and the Towson University Homecoming. Provide oversight and support to the campus programming community through Welcome 2 TU committee. Work with faculty, academic staff, and deans to identify major-based clubs and organizations and support their development. Establish and assess measurable departmental goals, student learning outcomes, program goals and departmental objectives and timetables. Serve on Divisional and University-wide committees. Serve as Divisional liaison to Athletics, Baltimore-Towson University (BTU) and CLR. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Master's Degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education administration or related field. Minimum of 5-7 years full time professional experience in Higher Education or a comparable job field (living-learning environments, personnel and budget management). Experience supervising staff. Experience advising/planning events and programs on a collegiate level, including familiarity with entertainment or performance contracting, and contemporary use of technology in a university setting. Demonstrated experience with leadership/training programs. Demonstrated experience in working with diverse populations of university students. Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, proficiency in desktop publishing, word processing and website development. Evening and weekend work are routinely part of this position.
