THE POSITION SUMMARY The Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) provides expertise and leadership at the University of Maryland around equity, diversity, compliance, and inclusion work. The following units are within ODI: ADA/504 Compliance, Bias Incident & Support Services (BISS), Diversity Training & Education, LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Nyumburu Cultural Center, Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct, Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE), and TerrapinSTRONG.

The Office of Diversity & Inclusion provides leadership and expertise for helping the university achieve its diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Guided by social justice principles, ODI cultivates a vibrant learning and working community for all members.

Serving as the university's Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) officer, this position works with all departments pertaining to the recruitment, selection, hiring and promotion of faculty and staff, and other human resources procedures, to ensure the university's compliance with federal, state and university equal employment opportunity/affirmative actions laws, regulations, and policies. This position will assist in the development of related policies, guidelines, procedures, and programs; keep current on changes to personnel-related laws and regulations; assist in ensuring timely planning and implementation of processes and procedures to ensure compliance; and identify risk areas and gaps between practice and policy/regulations. The EEO officer will lead and oversee updating and implementing the university's Equity Guidelines for Search & Selection in collaboration with stakeholders. This position will serve as the equity administrator for SVPAAP faculty and staff searches and APT committees; this includes, but is not limited to, delivering equity charges, reviewing search and selection plans in eTerp, reviewing supporting documentations for search actions, reviewing finalist and search waiver requests, and providing counsel throughout the search process. The EEO officer will develop, implement, and train on the university's Affirmative Action Plan and other institutional processes, in coordination with leadership and key stakeholders. This position will conduct outreach and education about equal employment opportunity and nondiscrimination requirements in collaboration with key stakeholders. At the request of the vice president for diversity and inclusion, the EEO officer may serve on or lead various committees and attend meetings. This is a newly created position that will report directly to the vice president for diversity and inclusion.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree. Six (6) years' of experience in EEO Compliance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of Equal Employment Opportunity and affirmative action requirements.
  • Ability to interpret policies and laws and make recommendations to key stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to conduct research and analysis and prepare reports.
  • Effective problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing, editing, speaking/facilitating.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, tact, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Ability to work independently as well as under direction.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and concise verbal and written reports.
  • Ability to organize and interpret data and records on diversity issues.
  • Intermediate to advanced user of Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Intermediate user of GSuite and Adobe Acrobat.

PREFERENCES:

  • Passion for supporting marginalized and historically underrepresented student populations and community members. Time and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and work with deadlines. Knowledge of relevant research and assessment standards in higher education. Successful experience leading teams and trainings. Supervisory experience preferred.

COMPENSATION & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Salary range for this position is mid $90s to high $110s and commensurate with experience. Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.
