Position Summary:

The Electrical Department within Facilities Services handles the inspection, installation, modification, maintenance and repair of the electrical systems. This position is a skilled Electrician responsible for electrical trade related tasks that ensure the upkeep of the college's electrical infrastructure and related components. The Electrician must be familiar with trade tools, blueprints, wiring diagrams, occupational hazards, safety precautions, as well as the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable standards to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.

Electrician performs complex technical work, on a journeyman level, in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and related electro-mechanical systems, in accordance with applicable Electrical Industry Codes. The Electrician inspects and tests elements of electrical systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, performs required repairs through replacement of inoperative parts or re-wiring of circuits, and provides an estimate of repair (and/or replacement) costs beyond the capability to perform. The Electrician also calculates branch circuit loads, interprets electrical wiring diagrams and schematics, and determines methods and requirements for wiring circuits.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Completion of work orders for the campus community
  • Ensure all tasks are completed adhering to NEC, ADAAA and other applicable codes and standards to maintain compliance.
  • Practice proper work methods and techniques at all times to ensure safe work practices and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot, test, maintain, repair, install, and modify electrical systems and infrastructure, including but not limited to interior and exterior lighting and controls, power circuits, wiring, switches, receptacles, motor controls and associated devices.
  • Install, replace and maintain conduit and wire, checking periodically and repairing as needed.
  • Perform preventative electrical maintenance across campuses, replacing breakers, transformers and other equipment as needed.
  • Use standard trade tools and testing equipment such as volt-ohm meter, ammeter, multi-meter, etc. appropriately and safely.
  • Maintain, inspect and clean tools and safety equipment periodically, replacing as needed.
  • Provide recommendations for materials and/or equipment to ensure work projects comply with proper specifications.
  • Respond to emergency situations, such as fire alarm concerns and elevator outages in an appropriate and timely manner coordinating with necessary vendors and the Security Services Department as needed.
  • Promote and adhere to all recognized safety practices and standards.
  • Assist other departments within Facilities Services as needed.
  • Participate in the rotation for on call and call back duty as required.
  • Promote and provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
  • Knowledge with DM View program for electrical analysis.
  • Knowledge with underground equipment locator and Fluke electrical testing instruments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Highly motivated team player with the ability to deliver a high level of interactive customer service, develop and maintain collaborative relationships. communicate effectively, as well as proactively solve problems are all required.
  • This position requires proficient computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of Office Applications, the use of an automated computerized work order system, as well as use of preventative maintenance software.
  • The Electrician must have the demonstrated ability to read and comprehend instructions, schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams, as well as experience operating and maintaining trade tools, the ability to work in confined spaces and aerial lifts, as well as elevated platforms of up to 65 feet.
  • The Electrician must also have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs., as well the ability to bend, stoop, stand and work overhead with arms extended for long periods of time.
  • The successful candidate must practice safety and vigilance in the identification of safety and security hazards to actively support a safe and hazard free working environment.
  • The qualified candidate will be organized, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and possess good time management skills.
  • It is necessary that the successful candidate have a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • The Electrician must also be able to work with staff at all levels within a diverse, multi-cultural, collaborative environment.
  • Washington State driver's license
  • Knowledge and experience in high-voltage distribution systems (4480 volts or higher) is essential to properly maintain the extensive high voltage system.
  • Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of: electrical codes, safety precautions.
  • Requires residential electrical maintenance installation and repair experience.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.
  • Assist in developing the repair and maintenance programs for new and existing campus-wide electrical requirements.
  • Knowledge with DM View program for electrical analysis.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge with underground equipment locator and Fluke electrical testing instruments.
  • May perform work in other trades, perform related duties as required.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, and a certification from a recognized electrical trade school and/or Journeyman or Masters Electrician Certification is required.
  • At least (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the electrical trade is required. Experience must include a thorough working knowledge of National Electrical Codes for installation and maintenance of electrical systems. However, significant work experience in electrical maintenance beyond that required for the position may be substituted for the required education, technical training, or apprenticeship.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community


Compensation and Benefits: The budget for this position is $30 - $33 per hour. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.
