Headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). The work location for this position is at 801 W Prospector Place, Bldg 1, Lincoln, NE and is 30 hours per week.

Examples of Work
Duties include, but are not limited to: Compose general correspondence, participate in personnel administrative hearings and arbitrations, interpret labor laws and compose administrative regulations and policies. Respond to complaints filed with the State and Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions, and advise department and administrative staff regarding compliance with Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Advise department and administrative staff on interpretation of labor contracts, and state personnel regulations. Respond to employee grievances and discrimination claims. General tasks associated with legal work assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Three years of experience as an attorney practicing law and providing legal services such as preparing and trying cases, advising clients, and/or interpreting laws or administrative policies. In accordance with Section 7-101, Nebraska Revised, Reissued Statutes of l943, incumbents in this class must be admitted to the Nebraska Bar.

PREFERRED: Experience practicing; to include previous government and human resources experience and specific experience of a nature commensurate with the duties described above including contract, human resources and labor relations law.

OTHER: Must be licensed to practice law in Nebraska. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, a drug test. Once employed, all incumbents must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Department of Correctional Services pre-service training program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent research skills; ability to issue verbal and written opinions to NDCS administrators and staff; knowledge of state and federal statutes and case law, and constitutional provisions relating to correctional institutions and employment; knowledge of legal processes before the courts and administrative bodies in Nebraska; ability to compose correspondence and legal documents.
