GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching ESL courses to students enrolled in Kirkwood's Secondary Programs. Instruction will take place in Cedar Rapids, though there might be opportunities to teach in Coralville or online if there are also openings at those locations. At times there might be travel to other Kirkwood locations for meetings. Classes are held Monday through Thursday. We are currently hiring for classes that begin in July 2024. Onboarding for the position would start early June 2024. The session dates include: July 8 to August 22, Sept. 3 to Oct. 17, Oct. 28 to Dec. 19., Jan. 21 to March 6, March 24 to May 8, May 12 to June 5. Morning classes are held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM or 11:15 AM 1:15 PM. Evening classes will be two hours per day Monday to Thursday. The exact start and end time for evening classes is to be determined. There are multiple openings for mornings and evenings classes. The total hours per week for one class equates to10 hours, with extra hours being available for team meetings, special projects, and professional development.
Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:Prior experience teaching adult ESL/ABE learners or working with adult immigrantsPrior experience teaching ESL or foreign language at any ageBachelor's or master's degree in TESOL, Education, Foreign Language Teaching or related fieldTESOL training/certification preferred, such as K-12 certification in ESL, bachelors or graduate studies in TESOL, TEFL certification or completion of MN Literacy Council pre-service training courses for adult ESL educators (http://online.themlc.org/).
