Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Job Summary:

Responsible for providing the pathologist with accurate and timely results of samples submitted for flow cytometric studies.

Essential Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring of QC and troubleshooting of flow cytometers
  • Ensures the proper handling and identification of patient samples
  • Maintains log of samples received for flow cytometric testing
  • Records bone marrows received in the bone marrow tracking log on the shared drive, along with any additional testing information or notes
  • Processing of flow cytometry samples for leukemia/ lymphoma analysis
  • Analysis of data on FCS Express software, printing results packet, delivering results to pathologist in a timely manner
  • Consultation with pathologist regarding gating and performance of any additional markers
  • Notifying pathologist immediately when a patient has a suspected new case of acute leukemia
  • Ensuring that additional pathologist requests are performed (cytogenetics, FISH, etc.)
  • Maintenance and cleaning of Wescor cytospin and stainer
  • Assisting with validation of any new reagents or platforms
  • Notifying manager of any issues with samples, instruments, reagents and/or software in a timely manner
  • Monitoring inventory, giving accurate information for ordering reagents to the flow cytometry manager
  • Performance of proficiency testing received in accordance with established policies for PT handling
  • Ensuring quality of all antibodies used for testing through performance of lot-to-lot studies, and by performing controls as specified in the department procedures
  • Responsible for maintaining state licensure by attaining at least the minimum number of CEU's, and by applying for renewal in a timely manner
  • Maintaining a thorough understanding of the FCS Express software, maintaining templates as necessary
  • Sending out any heme samples for additional cytogenetics or molecular studies
  • Checking the websites of our reference laboratories on a daily basis for final reports for our heme send-out work (cytogenetics, FISH, etc.)
  • Preparation of summation reports for bone marrow samples
  • Providing backup in the bone marrow processing area during hours where it is busy, or bone marrow tech is unavailable
  • As needed: accessioning any samples for flow cytometry, accessioning bone marrow samples
  • As needed: grossing bone marrow samples, preparing them in cassettes for subsequent processing by histology
  • Uploading finalized send-out reports to the corresponding PowerPath case so they can be seen by the client in the portal. Converting to pdf and jpeg as needed to do so.
  • Preparation of RPMI, with performance of lot QC on each batch prepared
  • Distribution of RPMI to clients and/or Cytology as requested
  • Freezing of positive patient samples for controls
  • Email delivery of reports to UMC in proper word document form so the UMC staff can place into Cerner
  • Additional training for instruments/ software as needed
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality.
  • Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
  • Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

AS or BS in a laboratory science; MLT or equivalent (Specialty Technician or Technologist license in Flow Cytometry preferred)

Experience:

  • 1 year of practical laboratory experience preferred.


Equipment:

  • Computers, computer programs, and information system(s).
  • Flow cytometers
  • Wescor cytospin/ stainer
  • FCS Express software
  • Centrifuge

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of flow cytometry theory and instrumentation
  • Knowledge of FCS Express software
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations, accreditation standards, laboratory safety, proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control.
  • Good clerical, organization and communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.

Environmental Working Conditions:

  • Laboratory Setting; exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, blood borne pathogens, chemical hazards and sharp instruments.


Physical Requirements:

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
