Position Summary:

LifeMoves and Operations-Food Services are seeking experienced individuals for the position of Food Service Coordinator to perform a variety of work, which may include preparing, serving, and storing food; assisting in maintaining the kitchen and other dining areas in a clean and sanitary condition; performing routine tasks related to delivering food and supplies; and possibly serving food at several shelter sites. Successful hires will be placed in under the Food Service Manager and may be assigned to our South Bay shelter sites and may be asked to provide coverage for our North Bay shelter sites

This position will cross train with food service operations and will assist with other operational functions as needed.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • One year of experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen, which has included the preparing and serving of food, and the cleaning of kitchen equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to ensure food is always kept safe by following food safety sanitation guidelines
  • Food Handler Certification or ServSafe Manager Certification Proficient
  • Computer skills and overall "tech-savviness."
  • Professional experience in food service or nutrition related field a plus
  • Must hold a current driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
  • Must be able to pass background check
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience as an effective team player
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds safely and keep up with the physical demands of the job
Duties may include but are not limited to the following

  1. Act as a liaison between food services and community partners/volunteers to create a structured meal plan for clients daily
  2. Assist Cooks in the preparation of meals, as directed.
  3. Drive a truck or van to deliver food and supplies; may maintain basic records related to vehicle use such as gas/mileage and service reports.
  4. Create a healthy environment by serving clients during meal service to develop a better relationship with food
  5. Coordinate and source food from local food banks, donors including corporations, restaurants, and faith-based groups.


  1. Source items from the local food bank to prep, cook and distribute across all sites
  2. May direct the work of clients who are assigned to clean and prepare food or assist in related routine tasks defined by Program Directors
  3. Maintain compliance with all food and health agency related inspections.
  4. Complete monthly reporting of activities for the Second Harvest Food Bank and other partners.


Other Duties
  1. Clean items used in the kitchen such as dishes, pots, pans, containers, carts, and equipment.
  2. Clean facilities including sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing work areas such as floors, pantries and warehouse, and trucks; empty garbage cans.
  3. Assist with supplies and deliveries including signing for, bringing in, and/or storing items.
  4. Encourage clients to make use of programs like CalFresh, Snap, WIC to access food.
  5. Assure the proper care and maintenance of vehicle.
  6. Contribute to the food service team by cross training for all positions.
  7. Attend and participate in trainings and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
  8. Participate in general staff meetings, 1:1's and other meetings and events planned by the Food Services Manager.


Position Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Professional experience in food service a plus.
  • Personal or professional experience working with the homeless or with mental health clients a plus.
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, ideas and practices that promote diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Ability to work as part of a team to meet food service team goals.
  • Ability to complete food safety training and testing.
  • Proficiency in internet research and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must hold a current driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds safely.
  • Must be able to pass background check
  • Must be able to problem solve independently and work as a team member.
  • Must be flexible, prompt and reliable.
Physical Activity Requirements:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell
  • The employee is required to walk and sit frequently. The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
