Saybrook University seeks a Federal Work-Study Student to join its Department of Research as a Teaching & Project Assistant.

Under the direction of the Director of Research and the IRB, the Federal Work Study Student: Teaching & Project Assistant is responsible for carrying out a variety of tasks to support the Department of Research faculty.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Under the supervision of the Department of Research faculty, Teaching Assistants provide instructional support for foundational research courses: RES2100: Research Foundations and Literacy, RES2300: Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis, RES 2500: Quantitative Data Collection and Statistics, and/or RES 2700: Statistics.

Under supervision of the Director of the Department of Research and the IRB, and/or Research or IRB faculty, or experienced student assistants, Project Assistants contribute to a variety of Department of Research and the IRB projects, including the development of policies and procedures, research curriculum, RC seminars, and research and IRB resources.

Responsibilities will vary depending on the course assigned and project needs, but may include providing assistance with:

Student Support:

  • Library Literacy: Support students in accessing and setting up student accounts for Saybrook academic resources (Refworks, SAGE Research Methods, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, and PubMed).
  • Research Literacy: Support student success by providing resources to help students identify components of research and methodological approaches, and qualitative or quantitative data analysis.
  • In coordination with the faculty of record, provide tutoring through "drop-in" time, and/or facilitate conferences calls that offer tutorial support.
  • Help students locate and use Research Tools Resources (LibGuide) and IRB resources, as needed.
  • Under the supervision and direction of the faculty of record, provide periodic tutoring on a limited basis for students needing greater than average assistance.

Course and Instructor Support:

  • Support curriculum through familiarity with course syllabus and Canvas course shell.
  • Assist faculty with course development, syllabi revisions, and Canvas shell updates.
  • Support faculty with pre-term course set up in Canvas.
  • Support faculty with organizational tasks related to student assessment and gradebook application.
  • Co-facilitate online discussion forums and videoconference calls with the faculty instructor.
  • Conduct a preliminary review of student assignments and provide feedback under the supervision of the faculty instructor.
  • Identify current research articles and research related instructional materials.
  • Communicate with students on behalf of the faculty instructor.
  • Collaborate, as needed, with other Department of Research Teaching Assistants.

Position responsibilities for the Project Assistant role include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Develop and implement online forms.
  • Create and/or update department data bases.
  • Deliver weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports as needed.
  • Collect and review research and curricula, policies, and resources used by other universities.
  • Prepare flowcharts and descriptions of research sequence and procedures.
  • Complete additional training around human subjects research protections regulations (45 CFR 46) if supporting the IRB.
  • May help coordinate IRB committee meetings in Mentor IRB.
  • Create drafts of official committee correspondence and meeting notes.
  • Contribute to the development of new processes and procedures around the IRB review.
  • Collect and review IRB policies and resources used by other universities.
  • Assist with RC materials and other presentations.
  • Create MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Forms, and/or Mentor IRB materials for various projects.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Candidate must be a current Saybrook doctoral student in good standing.
  • For TA positions, must have successfully completed the course to which they are assigned.
  • Must have applied for federal work study via the FAFSA.
  • Available for TA training with Department of Research faculty prior to start of term.
  • Adhere to FERPA confidentiality standards.

Position Qualifications:

  • Candidate must demonstrate competency in one or more of the following areas: library literacy, research literacy, foundational qualitative and/or research design principles and methods of analysis.
  • Competency with APA 7 style and formatting.
  • Experience using MS Office 365 tools, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and forms.
  • For RES2100, RES2300 and RES2500 TA positions, experience with using reference management software and strong library skills.
  • For RES2500 and RES2700 TA positions, experience with statistical methods that are covered in these foundational quantitative research courses.
  • Experience using videoconferencing software (GTM, Zoom).
  • Willing to develop administrative skills in Mentor IRB.
  • Technologically skilled in communication, presentation, and Canvas online learning system.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
