Position Information: Description

This position is located at the EERC, an international leader in energy and environmental research, conducting projects for clients throughout the United States and the world.   • Work in strong collaboration with EERC subject matter experts, principal investigators, and EERC leadership to conduct laboratory analyses, experiments and interpret laboratory data to support research activities related to improved production of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in unconventional and conventional formations and fuels analysis.   
  • Work as part of a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers to ensure that laboratory work is successfully completed on time, on budget, and within client expectations.
  • Perform analytical research focused on chemical and geochemical evaluation of water, oil, rocks and other natural and man-made materials.
  • Ensure that laboratory data and results are of excellent quality and integrated with the theoretical, modeling and field components of related EERC research efforts.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and assist in regular review and updating of laboratory safety plans.  
  • Work closely with senior staff, project managers and laboratory staff to develop and expand the research-based efforts occurring in the laboratories.
  • Set up equipment and instrumentation to allow for chemical and geochemical analysis of oil and rock samples.  
  • Provide technical assistance on projects related to CO2 EOR, CO2 storage, unconventional hydrocarbon recovery, natural resource management, biofuels development, critical resource characterization and recovery, geologic and synthetic materials characterization, and the environmental aspects of energy development.
  • Some travel is required.

Required Competencies
  • Hands-on experience with GC and GC-MS operation/data acquisition, data interpretation, maintenance, and light repair/modifications. 
  • Experience with identification and measurement of polycyclic aromatic compounds, saturate and aromatic biomarkers, diamondoids, gasoline range hydrocarbons, n- and iso-alkanes.
  • Strong knowledge of chromatography and its application in petroleum geochemistry and environmental science. 
  • Ability to modify analytical methods and conduct experiments.
  • Experience with internal standards, ability to resolved complex mixtures.
  • Experience with sample preparation using solvents and/or thermal desorption.
  • Familiarity with fingerprinting technique, production allocation.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills. 
  • Knowledge and willingness to learn about new technologies.
  • Adherence to and promotion of good safety practices in the workplace and field.
  • Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Experience preparing high-quality technical reports and documents and in preparing and delivering technical presentations.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in analytical chemistry, geochemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science or closely related field with strong fundamental knowledge of organic analytical chemistry, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in the oil and gas industry, national laboratory, or in a commercial laboratory.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, including data acquisition, processing and analysis, adherence to and implementation of laboratory safety and quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) protocols. 
  • Experience analyzing and evaluating subsurface media and/or fluids as they pertain to oil and gas production, enhanced oil recovery, CO2 storage, oil refined products, or produced water characterization.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, geochemistry, petroleum geology or closely related field. 
  • Five or more years of scientific research experience in the oil and gas industry, a national lab or a commercial lab.
  • Experience performing and interpreting the results of whole oil GC analysis, GC-MS-based identification of polycyclic aromatic compounds and biomarkers.
  • Knowledge of Agilent instrumentation and/or software packages such as Mass Hunter, Chrom Perfect, Malcom (Schlumberger) or equivalent.
  • Experience applying geochemistry data and geochemistry principles, techniques, procedures, and analyses to solve problems related to oil and gas development and/or carbon sequestration.
  • Experience writing proposals for technical work.
  • Experience with ICP-MS or ICP-OES analysis of trace metals, magnetic balance, PVT cells, miscibility studies and equipment is a plus.
  • Proficiency and experience with one or more of the following: experimental design; applied laboratory research; gas chromatography and hydrocarbon analysis; environmental chemistry; geochemistry; organic petrology.     
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$70,000 Annual/Full-Time, Benefited, Exempt

Work Schedule/Start Date

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with flexibility to accommodate work activities/work life balance. Travel may be required.
