Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Humanities Section Head in Research and Instructional Services department, this position will work closely with subject librarians whose work includes research services, instruction, collection development, and outreach. This mix of responsibilities will depend on the needs of the department, and the background and interest of the successful candidate. Mentorship is an important component of this position, and there will be opportunities to meet regularly with members of the department and engage in a variety of professional development activities. This position may be either remote or remote/on-campus, depending on current Duke campus policy as well as the needs of the intern.

Responsibilities
  • Provides research support through the Ask a Librarian service via chat and email
  • Assists with collection development activities such as catalog searching, resource selection, and assisting with collection analysis projects
  • Participates in the library's instructional program both synchronously and asynchronously, particularly for first-year writing
  • Assists with online and in-person outreach activities such as special programs, writing blog posts, and creating handouts
  • Promotes collections and resources through LibGuides and social media
  • Helps to create a sense of belonging and success for students and other patrons with a focus on recognizing the value of diverse backgrounds and life experiences
  • Other special projects and duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

Required: Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree and must currently be enrolled in or a graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.

Preferred: Currently enrolled in an MLS program accredited by the American Library Association.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: None required.

Preferred: Demonstrated interest in or past experience with teaching or training; experience or degree in a Humanities field. Good communication and presentation skills; flexibility; demonstrated ability to take initiative and work in a team environment; willingness to speak to diverse groups; desire to work with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and library staff; and a strong public service orientation.

Working Conditions

  • Combination of remote/on-campus hours depending on Duke campus policy and the needs of the intern
  • Access to a computer and reliable internet will be required when working remotely
  • Must reside in North Carolina

Hiring Rate

$18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

This two-semester internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 19 hours per week. Potential changes to the format for this internship can be made as needed and agreed upon by the intern and supervisor with a focus on health and safety. Flexible schedule, but the intern is expected to have some amount of availability between 9am-5pm M-F due to meetings and participating in virtual/and or in-person library services.
