Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $18.75 upon acquiring necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Successful applicant will be under immediate supervision and trained to perform standard tests on construction material, perform inspections in routine phases of construction projects, and/or participate as a member of a highway construction or a preliminary design survey crew. Examples of Work
Perform or assist with standard tests on Portland cement concrete, asphaltic concrete, soil, aggregate and other construction material for conformance to specifications, and maintains automated records. Perform tests such as slump tests, entrained air content tests, and unit weight tests on Portland cement concrete. Perform soil tests using nuclear gauge to measure density and moisture content, uses balloon volume measures, scales and heating devices to calculate the density and moisture content of soil. Inspection work includes: Inspect contractors' work on construction projects including checking grades and elevations, and collecting, recording measurements, and maintaining automated records. Observe transportable and stationary scales to weigh contractors' trucks containing materials used in highway construction such as concrete, hay for mulch, asphalt, and gravel. Inspect earthwork and removal operations. Read construction plans to understand dimensions and information shown and applies the information to the inspection of projects. Survey work includes: Participate on a highway construction survey crew responsible to utilize construction plans, blue top data, and cross section data to stake locations at highway construction sites. Reduce survey notes and plots cross-sections. Measures elevations using a survey rod and level, measures long distances using a measuring chain, and measures short distances using a tape measure or electronic measuring equipment. Make standard computations, operates transit, total station, and/or level. Cuts and clears tree brush to clear a line of site to complete surveying. Measure and set benchmarks for elevation. Participate on a preliminary survey crew to collect data from the field for use in design of highway plans. Record field notes in logbooks. Complete routine and general maintenance of equipment. Load and unload materials, equipment and supplies. Operate snow removal equipment to assist State Maintenance. Effective communication skills are required to perform the essential functions of the job. Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED: Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry,& geometry. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including word processing, spreadsheets, Sitemanager, Geopak and Microstation software.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; grammar and spelling; basic computer operations and associated software. Ability to: perform manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions; lift equipment and/or samples weighing up to 100 pounds; communicate in person with the supervisor, coworkers, and the public to exchange information; understand and follow instruction; interact courteously and tactfully with coworkers and the public; understand and follow instructions; keep records; learn basic methods and techniques of surveying, materials testing procedures and techniques, and construction inspection procedures and related operating equipment; learn basic computer methods and associated software for recording and compiling data; learn to read, interpret, and apply plans and specifications; learn employing agency rules, policies, and procedures related to field construction activities. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions.
