Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $18.75 upon acquiring necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Examples of Work
Participates as a survey crew member, including running the rod or chain, cutting and clearing brush, running tapes in measuring distances, setting benchmarks, placing grade stakes, and making standard computations; records field notes and operates survey equipment for training purposes. Performs or assists with standard tests on Portland cement concrete, asphaltic concrete, soil, aggregate, and other construction materials for conformance to specifications; maintains related records. Performs or assists with inspections in routine phases of construction projects, including checking grades and elevations, collecting and recording measurements of a routine nature, learning to operate testing equipment, and maintaining related records. Assists in keeping records for contract pay items using appropriate technology. Drives commercial and/or non-commercial vehicles.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED: Experience with word processing, spread sheets, Microstation and Geopak software is desired.

OTHER: A valid driver's license is required. Must have a good driving record and possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Drivers License (COL) with Tank Vehicle endorsement or must obtain a CDL within 6 months of employment. Required training and costs associated with obtaining the CDL will be paid for by the Department.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and basic geometry; grammar and spelling; basic computer operations; basic methods and techniques of surveying, materials testing procedures and techniques, and/or construction inspection procedures; departmental rules, policies, and procedures as they relate to construction projects.

Ability to: perform manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions; lift equipment and/or samples weighing up to 60 pounds; interact courteously and tactfully with the public; understand and follow instructions; keep records; communicate both orally and in writing; read and interpret plans and specifications; perform mathematical calculations.

Skill in: surveying, materials testing, construction inspection, and/or operating equipment, computers, and associated software. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and other highway emergencies within 45 minutes under normal driving conditions.
