About the Department

The Fehon laboratory in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago studies the roles of actomyosin dynamics and upstream components in the Hippo signaling pathway in controlling tissue growth and morphogenesis during development. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Job Summary

Exciting research opportunity in a stable research laboratory with an interactive, productive environment. The Lab Technician will work on a long term externally funded project that focuses on upstream regulatory mechanisms that control tissue growth during normal development and in disease. Our research integrates genetics, genome editing, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and high-resolution confocal microscopy using the premier experimental system for combining these experimental approaches, Drosophila. The Lab Technician will be directly involved in designing, implementing and analyzing experiments under the supervision of the PI and other senior laboratory staff. This position also provides general technical support for the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and analyze experiments under the supervision of the PI and other senior laboratory staff.
  • Track and order laboratory consumables.
  • Maintain lab databases.
  • Distributes requested reagents to outside laboratories and oversees general laboratory organization and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments, interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Maintains recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Has general awareness in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Coursework in cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, and/or genetics strongly preferred.

Experience:
  • Research laboratory experience in at least one of the following areas - cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, and genetics - is strongly preferred.

Working Conditions
  • Standard research laboratory environment.
  • Weekend/Evening hours: At times, depending on developmental timing of the Drosophila insects studied and the exact experimental protocol it will be necessary to work weekend or evening hours.
