Job Summary
The Laboratory & Incubator Facility Manager manages operational functions of the EnterpriseWorks building, laboratory services, shared facilities, and responds to tenant service needs for startup clients. Responsible for the effective, cost-efficient, and timely management of facilities and service functions. Provides general customer service support to the small business tenants at EnterpriseWorks incubator and other startup operations and facilities developed in the University of Illinois Research Park.

Duties & Responsibilities

LABORATORY MANAGEMENT

  • Laboratory & Incubator Facility Manager position will manage the daily operations of the EnterpriseWorks incubator facilities and other small business facilities managed by EnterpriseWorks in the University of Illinois Research Park.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of incubator facilities including troubleshooting malfunctioning lab equipment and computers reported by users, maintaining equipment, performing preventative maintenance, calibrating equipment as needed, setting up laboratories and offices for startup companies in the incubator, and managing building maintenance and improvements.
SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS
  • Serves as the primary safety liaison for the incubator companies with the Division of Research Safety (DRS) and helps to achieve compliance with small business tenants. Monitors and maintains user compliance to safety policies in the laboratories for process, protocols, and research lab audits. Utilize university best practices in DRS waste procedures and protocol.
  • Organizes new tenant quarterly events with companies and employees to share incubator protocols and shared entrepreneurial resources available to meet their needs.
  • Establish and maintain lab standard operating procedures/protocols for all shared equipment and instrumentation.
  • Provide training for tenants on using shared equipment in labs and the maker space and procedures and protocols to follow. Physically demonstrate to users how to run the equipment safely and accordingly.
GENERAL ADMINISTRATION
  • Manages transitions and exits of companies and employees from the facility for close out, decommissioning labs, preparing suites for new tenants, and maintaining protocols to remove access to companies and employees no longer actively at EnterpriseWorks.
  • Assists with employee onboarding with iCARD access, establishing NetID, parking passes, and orientation to the incubator facility.
  • Onboards new tenants at EnterpriseWorks incubator with their facility needs including office furniture, lab setup, access to campus core laboratories, access to campus laboratory supply stores, signage at leased suites.
  • Maintaining fixed asset inventory annually, including accounting of all EnterpriseWorks owned equipment and entering data in the FABWeb inventory system.
  • Coordinates with UI Tech Services manager at EnterpriseWorks to establish networking, computing, server, wifi, printing and other needs for IT at small businesses.
  • Coordinates with the EnterpriseWorks Building Service Worker on janitorial and maintenance needs for the facility.
  • Assists the Administrative Aide with reception desk requests related to the facility, including interactions with contractors, facility vendors, and package deliveries. Manager is responsible for Assisting with receipt of large/heavy laboratory equipment.
  • Assists with entrepreneurship event logistics, planning, and setup with the Assistant Director for Events and Programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position
    AND
    two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position,

    OR

    Total of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working in Higher Education in a laboratory setting or center of research
    • Experience working with small business, technology startup companies, or scientific business operations.
    • Proficiency in lab safety protocols, including understand of hazardous materials handling, lab safety operational plans and procedures for teams
    • Procurement and purchasing experience of laboratory equipment and supplies
    • Facility management experience with contractors, vendors, work orders, maintenance, and/or construction projects.
    • Experience operating maker space equipment such as laser cutter, 3D printers, saws, drills, and other hardware for instrumentation.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently with broad guidance and maintain strong project management, detailed records, and interactions with stakeholders/clients/team.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex tasks concurrently and an aptitude for learning new skills.
    • Enthusiasm and excitement in working with entrepreneurs to help them build their small businesses and new technologies in Champaign, IL.
    • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Zoom/Teams, database entry, and ability to use CRM Systems for records management.
    • Excellent documentation and attention to details, records management.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective relationships.
    • Desire to work in an exciting "everyone helps" team environment.
    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2408 - Laboratory Manager position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after closing date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range minimum is $50,000.
