Department Information

The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) is to provide high quality, humane care for research and teaching animals at Indiana University Bloomington, and to ensure compliance with federal laws and guidelines and campus policies related to animal use. Our team of animal care professionals work in a fast-paced environment where professional and personal growth is encouraged.

Job Summary

  • Performs animal husbandry (care, feeding, watering, and cleaning); monitors animal health and observes for overt signs of disease; reports any changes; handles, restrains and transfers animals as directed; performs euthanasia and disposes of remains and/or carcasses as needed.
  • Administers medications and performs treatments on animals as directed; assesses active clinical cases and reports findings; collects specimens, such as blood and/or microbiological swabbing, as directed; provide assistance in various procedures and operations.
  • Maintains sanitation of both the animal care equipment and the animal facility; removes excreta and debris; uses detergents and disinfectants to clean and sanitize cages, animal rooms and related areas.
  • Maintains/verifies proper record keeping (census, breeding records, animal health, surgery and maintenance records, document, sanitation, and equipment maintenance); participates in receiving, storing, and rotating feed, bedding, and other animal husbandry supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrates proper techniques and may provide guidance to less experienced technicians.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years relevant animal care experience.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification upon date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands

This position requires the ability to move about for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and operate equipment, tools, or controls. It also requires the ability to move items weighing up to 40 lbs. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential duties with or without an accommodation.
